Felixstowe strikes
Discussion
This could get big... Felixstowe is huge for containerised trade, and has long been held as a very efficient and reliable operator to plan supply chains through. For industry to pivot away would be hugely costly and expensive.
Port has offered 7%, plus £500. Unite haven't put that offer to the membership, but have gained support for a strike.
Port lead just on BBC News explaining that average wages at the port are over £40k. Unite leaning on that the Port is profitable so should 'share' more, and 'pay for a fair day's work'.

The port lead who told us the wage level should be commended for letting everyone know how much they are paid. They should be telling us how much the railway workers get as well. There may well be a little less sympathy for them then. As for not putting the offers to the membership this should be outlawed, estate agents have to pass on offers, so should the unions.

Devil will be in the detail with regards to the offer. There’s usually strings attached and we only know the headline offer (as per usual) so we’ll have to see if this is as generous as some think.
Unite spokesmen didn't mention anything other than the size of the pay increase...Their own releases mention nothing other than 'dockers getting a pay cut'.
Twitter is suggesting there are two union offices at the Dock. One presented the offer to their members, and gained 2:1 support for accepting the deal.
The other office didn't put it to their members...

The offer was 7% this year, but Unite are asking for more because staff only got 1.4% last year.
There's also a £500 one off bonus included as part of the offer this year.
The figure of £43,000 as the average salary is potentially misleading - that's across all port staff, not just the dock workers. So includes management, IT, etc. Be interesting to know what the average salary of those going on strike actually is.
For example. "Port Operative" job is being advertised now - salary is £31k including bonus and shift allowance. That's for a shift based job, including night shifts.

1.2% for us (public sector). Below inflation pay rises since 2009.
Besides when I’ve switched jobs or got a promotion, I can’t remember the last time I got a pay rise, regardless of my personal performance and exceeding all targets set for me. Mid-2000’s I think? At every single place I’ve worked, the deal for all of the staff has always been the same.
‘If you don’t like what you’re paid, find another job’.
With a couple of hundred applicants per vacancy, that’s easier said than done.

Yep same for me you get a pay rise if you get promoted I work for a large FTSE100 business so there are 10,000s in the same position (I hate it when they talk about private sector pay increasing because all I ever see is public sector pay increasing) I've had 1% in the last 10 years put on my basic that's it, I have access to a bonus pot though that is equal to my wage at the upper end so you end up having good years and not so good years and that skews things. At every single place I’ve worked, the deal for all of the staff has always been the same.

I think a 7% pay offer is good there is no reason to strike IMO.

I'm with them. Everyone should strike for better pay given how far stretched wealth inequality is now.
The very few have so much, the rest of us so little. The st hit the fan long ago.
What about the business that pay people dependent on goods flow like FWIW who has a container stuck? The very few have so much, the rest of us so little. The st hit the fan long ago.
Should they be impacted? Should others lose their jobs because of greed? Or Unions politicking????
Everyone is in the same boat right now, businesses dependent on goods flow have been kicked in the teeth by BOTH Covid and Brexit challenges. This is simple extortion and blackmail. It's not even a terrible offer, lots of people will be getting FA.
