You have free speech, as long as it’s our speech.

So funny how we’re getting so Orwellian and people will still excuse it. As per the posts that inevitably follow this, citing “safety”, “values”, “dangerous speak”.

If no one turns up because he’s not funny, no one will hear it, you don’t need censorship in any context.

It’s not censorship to not have him perform. They didn’t say he couldn’t tell the joke, just that their venue wasn’t the place for it.

It was bound to happen eventually, he’s a comedian who pushes the limits of what’s acceptable. He was going to hit a line eventually.

The fringe has got so corporate now that he’s probably seen as a liability by sponsors.

It’s a shame, it’s not what it was 15 years ago.

What's Orwellian about "if we'd known he was going to say or do XYZ we wouldn't have invited him to perform at our venue"?

Free speech doesn't mean you can turn up at someone else's house and literally do whatever you like just because they invited you in.

Because what exactly would you have down on a list that people can’t say?

(About the cock being pulled out... it’s an adult show, if you get offended by a penis, fine, but it’s your problem or your upbringing).

As I said in my original post, we’ve got people already telling others what is offensive and not.

I'd have thought "my house my rules" applies.

What you've actually got is a venue deciding what is and isn't acceptable for a performer to do on their premises.

That isn't Orwellian nor is it an attack on free speech.

When did this idea that people can say or do anything and it should be allowed if they add just kidding to the end come back?

It’s nonsense of course. The folk who argue it don’t even believe it.

I don’t know, before social media and when everything was recorded I think. Ironically the only person that got vilified for saying something during our “free democracy” was Salmon Rushdie... and he had to go in hiding and now is probably going to die from that, and that was 1989. I don’t know how old you are, but seriously people could say what they wanted, and everyone was fine with it.

I wonder what he said this time.

He's not been on TV since he outed Jimmy Savile as a paedo on his show in the 1980s.

I’m nearly 40 and that just wasn’t the case. The people who were badly effected by what other people said didn’t have any recourse.

Do you really think that everyone was fine with racist, misogynistic and homophobic humour before the internet?

Because that’s bks.

Yeah pretty much, because context is everything, it’s why we had sit comms like Faulty Towers and Till Death Do Us Part. People like to say it was because it was less tolerant times but it was actually the opposite. It was more real and the context was key to it all. And bottom line, it was damn funny.

In the world of the internet, there is no context. And it’s not funny. But it is virtuous.

You couldn't say what you want and people weren't fine with it it's more that if you were on the receiving end you'd have had very little recourse.

Do you think black people enjoyed listening to Bernard Manning and Jim Davidson telling racist jokes about them?

The idea all that stopped because of social media and the Internet is for the birds.

It stopped because society moves on and most of society realised it was pretty fking repellent.

You’ve never listened to Bernard Manning or Jim Davidson, that’s extremely clear. Or you’re too young enough to know about it. Manning was hilarious and ripped it out of everyone.

He must be on the wind up. Besides the point anyway as although Jerry Sadowitz has always been edgy, he was never that kind of .

Like I said before, it’s more likely that getting his cock out doesn’t match up to the corporate values of today’s Fringe.

Listened to plenty of it and back in the day they were considered funny.

Times change and they're considered dinosaurs now and that isn't because of social media and the Internet.

Going back to Sadowitz could you explain to me how a venue deciding who they do and don't want to allow to perform on their property is "Orwellian" please?

I have to admit, not my mind of show.
