Yes.

You can't go around deliberately killing people just because they're nicking your stuff.

He went back to the house after seeing video footage of the break in , armed with a knife, and hardley used reasonable force, and stabbed the intruder multiple times.

Yes he should and is in jail.

Yes he should and from a quick read I'm surprised it's "only" for manslaughter and not murder.

Unfortunately, yes. The argument is he should have just called police and left it up to them.

If he had been in stumbled downstairs on hearing a noise, happened upon them, then grabbed the nearest thing to him and, in fear for his life, bludgeoned them to death, he would have had a case.

There's no (real) castle doctrine or "stand your ground" in UK law, I honestly don't know if that's a good thing.

He travelled there with a knife. I think there's a degree of preparation. Different than reacting in the instant, isn't it?

"Jordan Brophy was no angel, he had a number of previous convictions and was under investigation for other matters at the time,"

It sounds like the burglar should have been in prison himself, not out on the rob. Then this would not have been possible.

He thought that nobody else was going to protect him or his home but went a bit too far.

He only deserves prison for the stereotypical scouser look.

A good kicking absolutely but multiple stab wounds and death...no, unless it’s self defence of course if attacked.

Yes, but not for 12 and a half years! (I think you get 2/3rd in prison for a 19 year sentence).)

About 3 would be right. )

(Not based on a legal analysis, just what's fair)

Above opinion retarded based on subseqenet facts

Aye.

However people get less than 19 years for murder in much more disgusting circumstances. Not sure what's going on there.

Karl Townsend was no angel himself:

Great journalism from the BBC....

Interesting to read that the attacker and victim were former classmates.

(Edited to add in Karl's surname.)

soapbox Take the law into your own hands only ends up one way and yes, he deserves to be in jail, stabbing someone once is bad enough but multiple times inside the house and then again in the neck outside the house....he's a danger to the public.

Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of this incident ....
It is interesting that the sentence of 19 years for Townsend sends a message to you & us ... the general public that we are not allowed to protect our stuff, we just have to accept that we are at the mercy of the lawless

Compare that to this sentence ....

He wouldn't have stabbed someone to death and got done for manslaughter.

Sounds like a win to me.

Well, if he was lucky, two or more hours later they'd have showed up, found an empty house, and then issued the tenant with a crime number. If he was unlucky, then a week or so later he'd have had a phone call from a desk jockey telling him how busy they were that night, and issued him with a crime number.

I’m assuming that the jury found him guilty of manslaughter rather than murder?
