Started thinking there is NEVER any good news nowadays.

I’m coming close to turning the news wires off and ignoring the news on TV.

It’s no wonder nearly 40% of the population are no longer watching it .

All news channels seem to thoroughly enjoy reporting bad news, sticking the boot in on Boris or anyone else they can attack .
Susannah Reid from GMTV loves nothing better than mud slinging, makes my blood boil.

Thank the lord for PH’s forums !

Saw your post on the other thread.

Turn it all off. Havent watched TV for 5 years plus now.

No good can come from watching the news. If you can call it news. Just agendas and propaganda now, along with a few depressing news stories.

Do it. Turn it all off.

I remember some years ago and the BBC had a strike. The god awful BBC Breakfast was replaced with a chap just reading the news old style. Now, news has become a business and 24 hour coverage means it needs something to try and make the entire day interesting. News hacks and presenters therefore try to be edgy, confrontational then we have "comment".

Ideally we need news to go back to be just that, no extras, not comment, just the news or more people will be turning off which is good for your health these days....

That's the problem. It used to be someone signing off a news stream with: "Joe Bloggs, ITN News".

Now reporters have lifestyled/evolved themselves into Z-celeb personalities or "broadcasters". They make themselves to be bigger than the news by promoting their personalities - the Pestons, Kuessenbergs et al of the world. Most end up on the scrap heap of Strictly.

I stopped consuming the news about 3 weeks into the Ukraine war - it turned into existential doom and gloom layering that on top of constant commentary about "Partygate", along with the cost of living crisis and I just found it incredibly depressing. I found myself, as someone put it, doom scrolling.....and it was just making me anxious. Now, I read the front page of the BBC for 5 minutes in the morning and that's it.I do feel much less on edge as a result.

Try the radio, If Susannah Reid annoys you, wait until you listen to James O'Brien and Shelagh Fogarty.

I like this idea if a quick morning glance and leave at that .

Problem is the wife puts that ITV BS on as soon as we’re awake.

And before you ask , yes she does wear the trousers smile

I few years back I was finding the number of inputs into my life overwhelming. I did a quick "mental health audit" and realised I could save so much angst by cutting out the news.

I now use Feedly to consolidate tech/cars/motorsport headlines, and that's about it. I figured that if something was important enough it would find it's way back to me verbally, either through friends or family.

So far I have been proven correct.

Switch it off: it sounds like it could also work for you! smile

Totally agree.
The BBC just loved Covid. No other views allowed. Totally one sided.
Now don’t watch the news.
Death sells.

J haven't watched the news for ages. If it comes on my car radio I might listen, more likely I'll just ignore it.

The way I see it, if it's something that is going to affect me then I'll find out sooner or later.

If not, then it's none of my business!

Let’s see how the wife responds to a YouTube ‘Harry’s Garage’ at 6am tomorrow!

Absolutely fuming that they dare to speak ill of the dear leader. Must be wrong. Best turn it off.

I flit between Times Radio and Radio 4 in the van.

Radio 4 until they inevitably start trying to bash me over the head with their agenda, then Times Radio until they start going on about sport too much (or, more frequently, I lose the signal).

If both, then silence.

I never watch TV news.

Pretty much the same as this.

I used to think it was important and ‘worldly’ to at least have a passing knowledge of what was going on in the world.

However after the pandemic overload, and watching people around me become obsessed with news, I decided to just cut it out.

I find it unrelentingly negative and overbearing. Very little of whatever ‘gate’ or crisis’ is todays nosebag has little to no impact on my actual day to day life, and what does I will be able to do little about personally.

The only gateway I still have is Private Eye. I appreciate their approach to journalism and the way they present stories with little hysteria. I choose to support it by subscribing.

I genuinely feel better for it. I hear people frothing about whatever scare story is todays news and quietly think to myself ‘it doesn’t matter’…

We don't have an aerial so we never just have the TV on, because of this I haven't watched any news programs for over 18 months now. Unfortunately I still read the news on the BBC and Daily Mail, and like you say it is never good news.

Every news article on the Daily Mail is some blown out of all proportion story about how we are going to die due to Covid/not enough lorry drivers/fuel shortages/fuel prices/summer being too hot/winter being too cold/stock market/house prices/monkeypox etc. etc.

To be honest I am sick of it all, I am certain people's overall mental well being and happiness is lower because of all these stories about some imminent disaster that is about to happen.
