Am I the only who finds the sudden censorship of pronouncing the capital of Ukraine only as Kyiv (‘keeve’) as opposed to ‘Kiev’ really irritating?

‘Keeve’ sounds like some b-lister Eighties Hollywood actor with a mullet hairstyle, or a bad boy pop group…

Annoying…

It’s how Ukrainians pronounce, and spell, their own country name?

I’m sorry it annoys you, but FFS.

You've only been saying "Kiev" for decades in the context of "Another triple helping of Chicken Kiev and Chips please", you parochial garlic-drenched bloater.

I think we should bite the bullet now and go full native pronunciation, Paree, Munshen, Roma, etc.

I am all for sensitivity of other countries and cultures but we don't pronounce Paris as a Frenchman would, or many German cities as they would, or Italy, or Spain or...well, yeah.

I see posted above that it's about translating from Russian Vs Ukraine. That's fully understandable then and we should do it, if that's the case.

It’s like calling the Royal Mail ‘Consignia’ just an inferior sounding word. Maybe in Ukrainian ‘Keeve’ sounds great, in English it sucks compared to Kiev.

What also sucks is that this sudden blanket pronunciation of Kiev as ‘Keeve’ in the media is overtly political as it is anti-Russian, and pro-Ukrainian in its motivation. Please keep politics out of our news media!!!

This one is a bit more legit to be fair.

Bayern Munich? Bavarian Munich or Bayern München. Translate the whole thing or leave it the hell alone!

Turkey has recently rebranded as Türkiye.

Well, good luck finding that left-alt-shift-function-meta-right-mouse-pedal on your keyboard that gets you a Turkish..sorry...Türkiyeish umlaut.

The fun really starts when you're in Italy and they're calling the place Monaco.

As for the Kyiv/Kiev Anglicization thing it's just one of those little tweaks that's got quietly thrown out there for political reasons. Keeps a few people happy, confuses lots of others, achieves nothing much.

Mumbai Potatoes / Mix just doesn’t work. I think we should go out into the world and bring culture to these underdeveloped nations.
While we’re at it, we can keep the peace and offer them protection… oh, wait…

It's been 30 years or so since I had a big night out in Stockholm, but I do vaguely recall trying to place a call through to Eekayuh on the Big White Telephone in my hotel room at the end of it.
