Seems excessive on the face of it. There's a whole raft of more serious "assaults" that get a suspended sentence and or community service

Eg (first one I found)

A Caerphilly man has been handed a suspended jail sentence after two women were assaulted in a Cardiff park.

Neil Silcox has been convicted of two counts of common assault, two counts of criminal damage, possession of a knife in a public place, and using threatening or abusive language with the intent of causing alarm or distress......

.....The court heard that the incident was a “prolonged attack on a vulnerable victim where children were present.”

Public figure gets assaulted so a message is sent with a custodial sentence.

Funny system really, our supreme leader flaunts the rules he put in place and nothing happens, I know which one is more serious.

Yup. The article reports the judge's explanation: sending a message about not hassling people who have come to public attention by the nature of their work, and the accused having an extensive criminal record.

AIUI he was out on licence for 1 or more of his 26 previous offences. I also doubt that vaping in the dock impressed the judge.

I doesn't read as him defending the assaulter.

I cannot believe just how incredibly stupid/thick/arrogant some people are. Just 8 weeks in hindsight is probably a bit of a result

I cannot help but wonder what you would have to do to an ordinary member of the public to get 8 weeks inside.

Quite a bit, I imagine.

Looks like a public order act conviction - not assault

Must admit my first reaction was that whilst I didn't have an issue with it 8 weeks sounded a bit steep.

Then I read a bit more about his behaviour and it's just a classic case of easy way or hard way and at every stage he chose the hard way.

IIRC the other guy pleaded guilty and got a suspended sentence. no doubt brain of the year would have got the same if he had done so too... wink

edit... yep 8 weeks suspended for 2 years.

Yeah fair enough. Richly deserved.

Nit picking, but was he sent down for breaking license from a previous conviction, this assault, or contempt of court? All 3 I suppose....

Meanwhile Katie Price breaks the law on multiple occasions and manages to avoid getting a sentence.

Sensible stuff from the judge there.

I think there were some in the original thread who were shall we say not that against what happened to CW. Sorry state.
