So what are the potential consequences for the owners of the dog, presuming that it is not a dog that is banned in this country? Can they face jail time?
They can go to gaolhttps://www.thesun.co.uk/news/11816697/mum-boy-kil...

Thinking about the pain that boy must have gone through is sickening.
There is absolutely no valid reason to have these breeds as pets.
The focus on breed ignores the issue that you should not leave dogs alone with young children, particularly young children that are unfamiliar to the dog. There is absolutely no valid reason to have these breeds as pets.
The dog may well have thought he was protecting his family if there was some play fighting or some such. You just don't leave them alone.

If it has been proved time and time again that people are not able to properly train this breed then people should not be allowed to own them.

I’d agree with that.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_dog_at...
Long since thought that dog owners have a brain blind spot when the dangers of
children and unstable carnivores sharing the same small house is pointed out as hazardous.
Hope they get jailtime, but I doubt it, probably a family of workshy f**kwits on disability so we can't
send them to the slammer, who'll look after young Wayne, Madison, Chantelle and Missy who are all on the spectrum ?

There's nothing wrong with the breed if they're looked after properly, the problem is morons treat them like crap and turn them into aggressive, angry little things. There is absolutely no valid reason to have these breeds as pets.

We can't own any animal we like, or even any canine we like for that matter, so it's some kind of inviolable principle that "good owners" should be allowed to own whatever breed of dog they like.
I think there is a good case for controlling both the type of animal that can be owned and who can own them.
I think part of the breed issue is not the breed specifically making them more prone to attacking (that probably has more to do with training and so on) but that when they do go rogue, they are more likely to actually kill someone, as they have powerful jaws and still have that hardwired instinct to kill, kill, kill...
Compared with a different breed of dog that when provoked, will bite, but is less likely to actually go on to kill the person that upset it (say by going straight for the throat and shaking them until the stop moving)

The dog has apparently been a nuisance on the estate for some time, which suggests it's often been on the loose.
The places where this happens always look depressingly alike.

But this is the whole point, there have been so many occasions where they are not looked after properly. The problem with this breed is its capability of killing , the 10y old boy being a case in point. Most angry dogs will bite, these kill. okgo said:

People say there are no bad dogs, only bad owners, yet (very) occasionally you hear of dogs from presumably mild breeds having to be put down, because they attack people.
