I'm shocked there's no thread running on this.

Net migration rose by 21% last year, with 239,000 more people arriving in the UK than those leaving, the Office for National Statistics has revealed.

In 2009, the total for net migration had stood at 198,000.

The government has pledged to reduce net migration to the "tens of thousands" by 2015.

As part of that drive, the number of skilled workers from outside the European Economic Area who are allowed into the UK each year is being capped.

ONS estimates put long-term immigration in 2010 at 575,000, up slightly from 567,000 the year before.

But the long-term emigration figure saw a sizeable drop from 371,000 two years ago to 336,000 - the lowest level for six years.

"It's emigration that is, in a sense, the problem for the government at the moment," said BBC home affairs correspondent Danny Shaw.

"Work is the main reason why people leave the UK, and the numbers of people leaving the UK for work reasons is down considerably.

"So what it would seem is that the economy in the rest of the world [and the] lack of opportunities for jobs elsewhere is actually making people not want to leave Britain."

its not just the skilled workers they should be capping, its the chimps that come here and just lounge about on benefits or at least pretend to while they work a cash in hand job at a crummy take away.

Besides, who then, is going to do all the jobs the feckless think they are too good for these days?

So, what has happened?

Have more people come to the UK or not?

There is perhaps no thread because it is too soon to tell if the government's policy changes are having any effect.

That is neither here nor their, It is the rate of change that is being called into question. Is the increase in the NET situation caused by an increase in those coming or an increase in those leaving.

Have you just contradicted yourself?

(as well as a grammatical error party)

Don't worry, Dave will sort it out - after all he's given us his word.

Guardian said:

David Cameron said yesterday that he wanted to keep the population of the UK below 70 million.

The Tory leader said that, if he won the election, he would limit net immigration to "tens of thousands" per year. Net immigration – the number of people migrating to Britain minus the number emigrating – reached 237,000 in 2007.

While it has declined with the recession, it was still 163,000 in 2008.

Cameron said that he thought net immigration of 200,000 a year – or 2 million a decade – was "too much".

"We would like to see net immigration in the tens of thousands rather than the hundreds of thousands," he told BBC1's Andrew Marr Show.

The figures were in the original post:

  • ONS estimates put long-term immigration in 2010 at 575,000, up slightly from 567,000 the year before.
  • But the long-term emigration figure saw a sizeable drop from 371,000 two years ago to 336,000 - the lowest level for six years.
Both; more incoming, fewer outbound. Simple.

The government needs to split the figure into EU and non EU net immigration to show if their policies have worked or not.

We cannot do anything about the EU immigrants. The Figure branded about is NET migration. The difference of people coming in and going out.

The figure should be for total immigration into the country and the split between EU and non EU to arrive at the true figure of immigration. Asylum claims seperate from visitors/students and settlement category visas. That is how you inform the public of reality.

Muppets....they think we are all idiots who cant read or write!

With the GBP/EUR not recovering to how it was a few years ago, didn't this have a big impact on ex-pat pensions?

Don't forget the impact leaving the EU would have on emmigration to other EU countries and the status of UK emmigrants who already live there.

My assumption was based on UK passport holders leaving - but as pointed out, the collapse of the GBP has meant many non-UK passport holders have returned home smile
