When all the talk of "The Recession" hit I though - oh aye. Commentators have been saying "very bad". We've had threads on PH about how bad it is. All the while I've been thinking and occasionally posting "the worst hasn't got here, yet" - we haven't had "The Rioting".

"The Rioting" is now here.

History has a way of repeating itself.

But is something different, this time? Possibly...

It will be interesting to see what this does to voting intentions. Will the public kick against the incumbent administration? Will they move to the right? Will the politicians now try to out-do each other in how tough they will be?

Interesting times.

I have zero sympathy for idiots who riot and distroy their own town.
Attacking properties and business in their area, often owned and run by local, hard working people is totally unaccepatable.

I am all in favour of a bit of revolution now and again to remind the Politicos who is in charge butthis is just robbery on a massive scale.

What do the riots have to do with the recession?

Exactly.

I watched a bit of Newsnight last night and Red Ken was on it. He was (in a roundabout fashion) was trying to blame the current government cuts for the rioting. To me, this is nothing but a load of feral kids getting above their station.

Idle hands and all that...

Recession wont be helping the overall scene.

Clearly time for tax stimulus..

Recession had precious litle to do with what we witnessed over the past few nights. We have been developing an under-educated, non-aspirational underclass, particularly of young black men, which has been growing in size and arrogance over the past decade or so. Something like this was bound to happen eventually - all it needed was some spark to set it off - and a spell of dry weather.

It's amazing how a bit of rain dampens the aggeressive spirits of such "protestors".

That's far too simplistic, and in any case, you haven't said who the idiots are. The rioter/looters are not idiots, they are seeing an opportunity and taking advantage of it, nothing stupid about that.

Agree - so naive to just label people "idiots" - they've got new Nikes today and are watching TV (when they wake up)on a 50" plasma ... they'd be daft NOT to go along with their mates and stock up given the life they lead. They hate the police, the police hate them, they have no job or chance of one...they wont get caught for looting, why not?

I'm no tree hugging leftie and would happily have snipers in London picking of anyone wearing a tracksuit after 7pm that still has a ticket on it - but to right of the cause as being "stupid people" is....stupid.

No it isn't. Stupid people are too stupid to grasp the totality of what they're doing. Stupid people are too stupid to consider the community, the hardworking business people, any wider effects of their actions. Too stupid to consider they might get caught.

Stupid people just "think" d'uh, nu trainers for free, I'll 'ave a bit o that.

They're too stupid to comprehend their own actions beyond free stuff.

OP, Do you REALLY think the riots across our once fine nation are anything to do with the financial situation?

Its nothing to do with that, its simply the scumbucket underbelly of the country deciding they would like a few free tv's, ipods etc and and excuse to go play gangsta.

Yes it is.

There is nothing inherently stupid about helping yourself to desirable stuff when the opportunity to do so with impunity arises. Anti-social yes, stupid no.

If anything this is a legacy of Tony & Gordo's development of the touchy feely H&S, no smacked bottoms and 'everyone has a right to feel special' bullst country we find ourselves in.

No respect, and no fear of a truly impotent authority. No effective punishments and an emphasis over an individual's 'hooman rites' has walked us towards a path of ill feeling and lack of any sense of society.

Bring out the rubber bullets and (if we had one) the water cannon.

Protests are great, marches - fine. This is thuggery, robbery and criminality on the most obvious and disgusting scale

They grasp the reality - the reality is free Nikes.

They dont consider the community because they dont care. When you walk past a collection pot for starving Africans you dont give because you dont care enough. You consider, you understand...you just dont care enough to alter your actions because of it.

Wider implications??? These kids live below the surface of society - they dont care about "wider implications"....they are sat there thinking that lower investment in the area might have an impact on their kids in 30 years any more than "we" worry about the effects of not recycling enough.

Get caught??? Serious? Are all PH'ers that do 100mph "stupid" - I'd say doing 100mph on the M3 carried a higher risk of getting caught AND a bigger punishment than helping yourself to a TV last night.

The 'cuts' haven't even hit properly yet.

It is unsurprising that this happened with a Tory government in power as left wing agitators push for this and all it takes is an initial spark.

Going forward the torrent of free cash is being turned off, whether that be 'regeneration' funds, funding for 'charities' which are 100% reliant on the state or all the excessive benefits of the Labour years.

But all this was foreseen and just demonstrates the folly of cutting police numbers in a depression.

Hit properly? They haven't even begun yet. Government spending has increased every month since the election.
