Why is it wrong for a business to make a profit? I really don't see the problem, the fuel they sell is still cheap its the tax on tax on tax that is expensive. I don't get how so many people do not grasp this.

Good for BP I say!

If one drops prices to stimulate demand, it will make less money even if sales go back to previous levels. The rest of the companies would see increased demand from the boycotting customers, unless those customers did not consume any petrol at all during the boycott. So, one company with lower income will see its share price drop. One of other companies in rude health will buy it. End result would be fewer companies, less competition, more monopolistic behaviour, higher prices. Exactly the opposite of what you want.

The only way is to reduce consumption across the board, forcing them all to move away from the business into other ventures that hold more reward. Or, drive down prices across the board and reduce revenues that way. Except that would mean increased production, which is not going to happen as it's not something the public controls.

We need to reduce consumption of not only petrol but also plastics and all other by-products of the petroleum refining/distilling process. Or find huge new reserves of oil.

Have you read about how much the fuel company makes compared to the tax put on the fuel? The amount of money they have to spend on drilling for oil?

If not, do so.. You'll be surprised, and be glad they're making a profit.

Why is this bad?

Is it a case of "they made lots of money, I dont have lots of money, those bast-rds"??

Would, world? Why would they feel embarassed. Did they cause the suffering you mention?

In 2010 BP donated $1.5m dollars to charities globally. How much did you donate?

Exactly. I am sure I read somewhere that BP makes something like a 6% net margin after tax on its global turnover. I'm sure someone can correct me if I've dropped a clanger with that, but if I am right then it's hardly a whopping margin is it?

very very good point . but the oil companys are holding back on oil production that brings the price up as well . any way if we didn,t have high taxes the sumbags that don,t work wouldn,t beable to live in the luxury they are accustomed too

Out of interest, how much do you think a barrel of oil should cost?

1 litre of brent crude: 45p
1 litre of WTI crude: 37p
1 litre of milk: 99p
1 litre of olive oil:500p
1 litre of bottled water: 45p

If you're impressed by the profits of these organisations, you should buy shares in them.

Cheers,

FT.

Do you have a pension Gary? What do you think it is invested in? What do you think is driving petrol prices, and where does BP make it's profits?

If a company of BPs size, operating in the high risk areas they do didn't make this kind of profit they wouldn't exist.

Last year they covered a massive cost of cleaing up the GoM, and they need a healthy bank balance to be able to do this.

Without the high rewards then the risk of doing this would be prohibitive.

The other option is they went bankrupt and brought down a lot of UK jobs and pensions with them.

Good on them.
