I was inspired to post this by some bloke in the employment forum complaining about being awarded a Desmond degree who apparently can't spell despite three years at some illustrious Socratic seat of learning.

As for poor English damaging sales, I know that when I was choosing a school for my daughter, the one which is closest to my house had to be rejected because it described itself on a sign, which its staff must walk past each day, as "An Independent School for Boy's and Girl's"; so we schlepped off up the road, and the journey is a fag, but at least my daughter was taught the (incredibly easy) secrets of the apostrophe by the age of six.

The research method is a little weak, but a valid point (based on a sample of 1 - i.e. me). I never buy from anywhere with poor spelling and/or grammar on signs, websites or labels unless I can find no realistic alternative.

A chap in General Gassing took me to task yesterday over my "pronounciation" of the word Porsche (I advocate pronouncing it the English way).

I just left it.

That's so stupid, that I'm having a hard time believing that it's true.

Misplaced apostrophes are almost as bad as misplaced commas.

The next time that I'm passing the school, I shall take a photograph of the sign. It's a pity that the school is not called St Custard's. Apostrophe abuse was also rife on the school's website, although I think that may have been corrected by now.

Very poor considering it's an independent school so I am guessing you would be paying money for a higher quality of learning.

According to the article, "recent research shows that 42% of employers are not satisfied with the basic reading and writing skills of school and college leavers and almost half have had to invest in remedial training to get their staff's skills up-to-scratch." This is unpossible as we know current educational standards are the best they've ever been with more and more students achieving 'A' grades at GCSE and A-level.

An acquaintance of mine who professes to be an English tutor, (amongst a million other things!), has this on their website......

"I love to explore new area's of history and pass these little known facts onto others."

The rest of the site is riddled with mistakes too. I'd point the mistakes out, but I hate them so leave them to be a laughing stock.

Ha! Presumably bought in Oxford Street! I have never met a single member of the University of Oxford (such being its name, not Oxford University) who owns or would wear an Oxford top, except when playing in a University Team.

I suspect that's not a site written by her, although it's funny that they're offering to teach English.

Another thing I find amazing relates to students attending the local University.

Now it is, admittedly, a former Teacher Training College that was, by varying degrees, elevated to full University status during the Blair years.

A significant number come into the bookshop to buy their course materials, whereby they just plant a reading list on the counter and point. Quite often some of these are either not in stock and have to be ordered specially as this is not the specialist University branch, or in some cases the book is out of print and not available on back-order.

These kids are incapable of understanding sufficient English to comprehend this; even using written notes, sign language, mime, or any other means tried yet they simply do not understand.

Now one appreciates that these kids are paying large sums for their education, but how can they be attending a course taught wholly in English and surviving?

Anecdotal evidence, aka gossip, gives some weight to the belief that many survive and achieve their final qualification almost wholly based on written coursework which is purchased; £2-3000 for a dissertation has been suggested as a going market rate. Certainly the number of such places one can find online suggests this is not just tittle tattle.

Actually their can be considered correct nowadays. It is not gender-specific so is preferable. I write for a living and such things limit and irritate. We need a personal pronoun that is not specific to one sex. In the meantime their will have to suffice.

I have occasional jobs correcting the English of projects. I give estimates first though and sometimes I have said that I would charge the same price as if I had written it as it needed complete rewriting. It is difficult as it has to appear as if it is written by the kid, so vocabulary and syntax has to be the original author’s.

I have been asked to make one look as if it had been a rewrite of Wiki. Pretty sharp mother there I thought.

Am i being a bit simple or is that the wrong use of the word 'there'. shouldn't it be 'They're'?

Unless of course that was intentional and i was just being slow smile

I'd go with the "slow" option.
