And so it starts, the soviets Russians are attempting to legitimise their land grabs in the Artic...by force of Arms.

Which landgrabs are these?

I really thought it was all ice up above the land-ey bits they already own.

The fact that they are talking about this means, to me, that although they have always had this capability now they intend to make it a speciality rather than the general "every-bugger-gets-cold"ness their forces used to run under.

Must be a slow news day IMO

A lot of it is land grabbing, just that the land tends to be under a bit wet thing I like to call the "ocean", all sorts of interesting things can be found there fish, crabs, mermaids, rocks, valuable mineral resources, natural gas and oil.

Mostly rocks though.

yes but most of what they are looking at is up above what they already "claim" anyway innit?

Do they get many mermaids, that would be worth discovering in a purely Barnum And Bailey way…

I kind of naively thought that if it was in your bit it was yours, unless it was Norway's or America's (yes Sweden and Finland too). Don't we have pretty well anything North of Scotland as far as the eye can see-ish?

I suppose (look you lot, making me think on a Saturday evening isnt kosher you know) it's OK until going north stops and any further moving is going south.

'spect that might upset Unca Sam

One thinks they have been biding their time until Western Europe is energy dependent, then they feel they can do what they want.

Quite. The Russians are putting more troops in their sphere of influence, and if the land is theirs under international agreement then can't shouldn't they do as they wish? It's not like they are invading a country to take the oil.

I remember reading a Janes article about America and Canada setting up Specialised Arctic Warfare units for the same purpose. This must have been a year or so ago.
