are the Brits bone idle?

The only reason I ask is because official figures say almost 90% of the 400,000 jobs created in the UK in the past year went to foreign workers. The other possibility of course is that employers are trying it on with the wages they're offering.
I'd be interested in how many Brits left the UK in the same time to work abroad.Wurls said:

The same statistic over Tony Blar Blar's reign is even higher. Top job Tone.....Wurls said:

Top job Tone.....perosnally I dont think there are many races that dont have their fair share of bone idle, feckless time wasters at one end and the highly motivated high flyers at the other. I bet even places like Japan have their bunch of wastrels who want to do nothing with their lives. Its just human and statistics... everyone cant be the same, everyone cant be a high flyer.
Question is do we have more of the bone idle brigade than other countries? Probably not.

I agree with this. There's high achievers and useless feckwits everywhere. The UK has plenty of both. Question is do we have more of the bone idle brigade than other countries? Probably not.

I suspect that it's due more to our over generous benefits system. I spent the best part of three years in Italy, and only the very old were seen in wheelchairs or using walking stick - in the UK, they (wheelchairs/walking sticks) are a very common sight for all ages to use. Why would that be?Question is do we have more of the bone idle brigade than other countries? Probably not.

In the main they are insufficiently educated and trained to be able to provide useable resource for industry. Couple that with an expectation and requirement to be earning a high salary to live on leaves them unattractive to business.
In the IT industry we're now in the position where the managing is being done by guys who have built up the experience over the last 20 years. The grunt work is now being provided mainly by indian workers, either them being shipped here or used offshore.
This is because they are cheap (on paper anyway), eduated/trained to a level where they can at least logon and do some basic programming and are willing and able to work for peanuts.
I look around the office here and of the 30 people I can see 20 of them are asian, either indian or chinese. There is not a single local under 25 years old. In the building as a whole, I'd say there's probably a higher percentage of local uk workers but I'm struggling to think of anyone under 25 that I've seen.
So where are the youngsters to work? Not in offices where the money actually is. I assume they're trying to find work where they can. The only youngsters I know of (16 years old or thereabouts) who are working are in McDs or Pizzahut. Hardly a great 'career'!

And that's a great point. I got my first job in banking as a clerk processing FX instructions (and that was with a degree 12 years ago). Now, all of this work is being done off shore, with the subject matter experts, senior managers and project teams on shore. How do you:In the main they are insufficiently educated and trained to be able to provide useable resource for industry. 1. Become an SME if you don't spend years doing the hard graft as a junior
2. Replace the SME's that leave?
Brits bone idle? certainly not!!! apart from a large number of bone idle Labour voters who "has been edewkated" as how to avoid work and claim benefits.
I'm just surprised at how many claim to have a university education (equivalent to a 2-month night-school course apparently) but who are unable to read, write or spell correctly, never mind carry out a conversation about a serious subject without falling into american jargon, marketing speak (blue sky etc) or some gutter english which obviously has been taught them by morons from the Estuary.
There are some brilliant people with whom I work, I however despair sometimes at their ignorance of general etiquette and elocution.

My 2p on this is based on my recent experience with a 24 year old university graduate, who was working for me as a gopher.
There was a base intelligence in there somewhere, but zero common sense, a complete and utter inability to follow orders (my primary tasks in both of my businesses revolve around project management, so I’m very used to scripting out tasks for subordinates to complete) and a work ethic that went from good when supervised, to bloody terrible when left alone and tragic, if he had to use his brain and show some initiative!
IMHO, it’s not the fault of the individual; it’s simply the result of this individual, being told that he must get a university degree. When in fact, what he would have benefited most from, is a vocational apprenticeship, where common sense and hard work, would have been beaten into him, using the time served methods of old.
Following the reports in the papers and on the news of Ian Duncan Smiths speech, declaring that employers should employ young English, I sent a mail to him and a number of other members of the Conservative party, asking for assistance in doing so, as it’s not financially viable, to hand hold an individual until the point that 13 years of labour brainwashing has been erased!
With all this and the prospect of punitive matternity leave, is it any wonder that employers are happier taking on more experienced eastern european workers, with a fantastic work ethic

This problem is only going to get worse in the coming decades as the next generation will not even have anybody of skill to train them. The whole ethos of Labour's education policy, that everybody deserved the right to a degree, has done nothing but devalue the degree qualification and stolen the correct higher education level (Polytechnic/Tech college/HNC/C&G/day release etc) for perhaps 60% of the generation. One size does not fit all in education.

Because the Italians drink their own weight in olive oil every week which lubricates their joints.Whereas the Brits eat their weight in lard every month which causes their increased mass to overload their joints, thereby rendering them immobile.
