York Council have failed to project manage their plans to build a fence with the boundary going straight through the middle of the football pitch goal posts.

DOZY council workers have sparked anger after building a 6ft steel fence THROUGH a football goal.

Contractors put up the £6,000 barrier across the pitch and under the crossbar in Heworth, York.

One parent said: "The fence cutting through the goalpost looks ridiculous and the first thing you think when you see it is that it's a joke or somebody must have had a bad day at the office.

"It's difficult to see why it's been done that way and I hope it's sorted out soon because it must be a disappointment for the children who use it."

Heworth Without Parish Council, which is responsible for the play area, says an urgent request has been made to correct the mistake, made during planned £37,000 improvements to the play area.

Dave Meigh, City of York Council's head of parks and open spaces, said: "We recognise that failure to relocate the goalposts is a real own goal and we have asked the contractors to resolve the issue as a matter of urgency.

"We can only apologise for the error."

But footie-mad Steve Barber, 29, added: "It's one way to defend the goals I suppose."

You might have hoped that the private contractors being paid to do the job would have used a bit of common sense. One phone call to the council would probably have avoided the problem occuring.

I wouldn't be surprised if that is the dumbest jobs.

Equal failures have been a roadsign that is not visible, a bus stop on a street buses can't stop on.

The problem is the moving of the goalposts will have been given to another contractor, who knows if that has even gone out for tender yet. You can bet your ass there will be some frantic meetings going on.

Surprised to see a public body not moving the goalposts for once.

This might seem a bit of an own goal from the touchline, but you can't just pitch up and try something like this without causing afence.

I see the jokes coming in thick and farce. I bet the contractors will still net profit.

You can't. frown

There should be a sticky about how to title threads in some sub-forums.

"Am I the only one..."
"You couldn't make it up!"
"Does anyone else..."
"The World's gone mad!"

All utterly useless. banghead

Contractor has job to build fence to given specifications. Removing goalposts not in specification. Contractor builds fence to given specifications, not removing goalposts. Council realises the goalposts look stupid and asks contractor to remove them. Contractor charges extra, as not in original job specifications.

I would hazard a guess at that being unfair to disqualify them from future tenders due to fulfilling their role exactly.

They could however do so if they did remove the goal posts.

A council can not decide to use someone on the basis they did their job properly.

One phone call? ONE phone call? Are you serious?

I would imagine a day on the phone for which the contractor would not get paid, and still the issue would not be resolved.

+1

The paper trail to get anything done in this kind of organisation can take months - and deviating from the original specification without a fresh paper trail could result in the contractor doing the work not getting paid by the contractor charging the council, even if the council still pays.

The muppet is the person who drew the plans & specifications.

I don't open these and hope they simply die of disinterest.

Due to the nasty coalition govt cutting LA funding, the entire Boundary Position QA team at York council has closed, resulting in 457 job losses. The Boundary Positioning and Sports Equipment Relationship dept was binned at the same time - another 862 essential jobs gone.
That is why the fence was put up like that. Blame Dave.
