In my locality they're currently marching against a mosque that's to be built in the area. As it goes I don't think it's a particularly good idea but how shall I deal with it? Not like this grumpy

At a rough guess I'd imagine 2-300 of their members marching down one of the local roads, which at first was more of a pain in the arse than anything nasty. They started throwing things at a couple of cars, so I took a couple of back roads to get in front of the march. When I got there, at the junction I saw an Arab man with a cut up face going apest at a PCSO and one of their members, also going apest. Now, the EDL are by and large a bunch of racist idiots, but how obscenely thick do you have to be to attack somebody when you're trying to make a point that does (racial reasons excluded) have some weight? What actually goes through their heads??

3 or 4 police cars and a couple of meat wagons have torn past, so I can't imagine this is going to end well. Ho hum.

Im not pro or anti EDL - i understand the frustrations that many of its members feel but its very easy for it to end up looking like chav yobs, (easy for the media to portray it that way?) and totally dont agree with a violent demonstration

I dont mean to start anything heavy but its easy to discredit an organisation by showing them in a dim light - i dont think an extremist would have much problem cutting ones face and complaining that 4 white EDL skin-heads jumped him.

If only the English Government could see that, they could have blown up a school bus, say they got a coded warning from the IRA... bosh.. funding withdrawn lol

I hear exactly where you're coming from; as it goes, I don't particularly want the mosque on my doorstep, the tension it will cause will be high and the parking's going to get even worse. For their cause in this particular incident, I actually agree where they're coming from, if for different reasons. So I have no issues with them marching. Indeed this must be at least the 4th or 5th one, all previous of which to my knowledge have gone without actual incident.

However, this one does appear to be turning nasty. And I just don't understand why? They were making a point and slowly seemed to be getting people (of all ethnicities) on side, so to ruin it like this just seems so stupid and narrow minded of them. banghead

Because EDL marches attract single brain celled idiots from both sides who like nothing more thank knocking seven bells out of each other?

20 years ago it was football!

Put all the extremists on an island slightly too small for them to be comfortable that's the answer I reckon, then we can have the media report on it for everyone elses amusement........Oh hang on.

I do understand some of the frustrations of members..however IMO they use these issues as an excuse to start fights. I was actually walking through Bradford when they arrived for there for a demo earlier this year and in all honesty there behaviour was absolutely disgraceful. I witnessed EDL members provoking a group of Asian lads for no reason who were actually minding there own business and were just shopping. The asian guys were actually trying to be diplomatic and told them to just leave them alone they that they don't want any trouble...then an EDL member starts throwing his fists punching one of the boys square in the face. Bunch of brain dead football hooligans IMO.

Ah the old EDL. What a nice bunch of people they are. They share a brain cell between them every now and again so they can write the odd article on why the UK is becoming an islamic state.

Funnily enough isn't Alan Lake, the brains behind this brainless lot jewish?

Wonder why a zionist jew is all out anti muslim?

@OP: surely mosques have to have planning permission just like anything else. Object.

'Worshippers' also have to abide by parking regs. If it gets built and the parking nightmare ensues, badger the council to enforce regs, get the local paper involved etc. (make sure your local churchgoers are also abiding by regs!)

Why isn't it a good idea?

Not far from me a Mosque was built funded by a group of Muslims from around the North East. They have cleared up a stty bit of waste land, built an impressive looking building, made lots of friends in the local community (that contains hardly any muslims) and have spent a lot of money building links with local schools (that have very few if any muslim pupils).

The same locals who objected to that mosque now attend social events there weekly.

You could always join those nice people at the UAF to even things up. Apparently it's now run by Ken Livingstone and the Scoialist Workers Party which probably explains why they have different joining prices for the 'waged' and the 'unwaged'. I expect they'd soon calm things down. . . . . .

I honestly think there's ALOT more EDL members who just cant be bothered to turn up to these marches than there were a few years ago.

either way its cage rattling from both sides. nothing newsworthy will happen.

Saw a program about the EDL, the presenter was filming things from the 'inside' with a camcorder during a demo, there were 3 lads having chanting...

'BNP, BNP, BNP, BNP....'

One of the organisers then said,

'No lads it's EDL, not BNP'

The lads looked confused for a bit and then started

'EDL, EDL, EDL.....'

I think sometimes they have a fair message, but their members and most of their organisation are just bored racist football hooligans.

If they have a problem with the mosque, then why don't their higher management take this up with the council? Why can't they sit down with the mosque commitee and see whether they can find a better solution? To be fair parking round the mosques over here can get a bit mental on a Friday and I certainly wouldn't like it if I lived round there but everyone wants to complain afterwards - never when the plans were in consideration.

Was nice to read about a mosque having a good effect from another poster, shame more of our lot can't be the same.

Hi Chris, glad it has worked out in your area, more a testament to the people like yourself who do not let prejudices get in the way of giving another person the benefit of the doubt *cough* vita4 *cough*.

Out of interest, which area is the mosque in?
