Pretty unexpected response to the loss of the Stanley Cup Final (Ice Hockey) in Vancouver last night. Having spent quite a bit of time there recently I'm very surprised, it didn't feel remotely like a city that needed to riot.

Literally thousands of people going mental. You don't even see that at football games!

Ahem! The Huns V Man U in 2008; I recall a good deal of civil disorder, although of a smaller scale.

That would be why I said thousands of people... You don;t see that at football. Football hooliganism tended to be much smaller groups.

True enough; the only comparable events that spring to mind are G8/WTO summits, Genoa in particular...

By unexpected you meant as sure to happen as a very very sure thing?

Watched it live on the telly last night. Within 5 minutes of losing there was a car on fire in the streets.

You could see as the match progressed the outside broadcasts in Boston were friendly and full of joy, the ones in Vancouver were getting more and more depressed and people started leaving pretty early. Obviously just leaving the hardcore rioters.

Leave the violence on the rink.

Same thing happened in another city last year, after the final.

I heard from a friend over there that 11,000 people have volunteered to help clean up Vancouver after the rioting smile Also the police are requesting any photos of the rioting so that they can prosecute the plebs who took part biggrin
