I've always said Facebook may be a "fad" only to be told that it's now a "way of life" for many. Although I understand the second thought process, I don't/didn't subscribe to it personally.

I've always thought it was a load of schoolboy crap TBH - I certainly don't need it to "keep in contact with my friends" and more the point I don't want to share ANY info of that kind with any *company* so I thought it was 'dangerous' too. Regardless many have made full use of it and love it. Fair play.

Anyhow - 6 million switched off in the US last month alone. 100,000 in the UK.

Is this $100bn "company" going to go the way of Friends Reunited, Myspace, Bebo, Hi-5 etc... People sacking it off because there's something newer/better/ trendier (especially the young teeny crowd) or is the next google?

You know what I think....

The danger is that it's most popular with young people, typically early adopters with less loyalty and attention span.

Facebook is getting great growth in Asia, but not in countries where advertisers or investors can get decent returns.

And the 20 somethings and older who can be most valuably monetised are the very ones switching off.

All of which could leave Facebook deserted by the high value users whilst at the same time a new fad can come along at any time and steal the traffic of the younger ones, who are not so loyal or afraid to move on to the next big thing.

$100 Billion? Really?

I think in the west a lot of people are realising that you phone or text your real friends and having a list of total strangers on a computer actually acheives nothing!

Very few people have genuine friends scattered over the world to need such a tool. The rest just got it "coz it woz cool init!"

Maybe 6 million Americans, and 100,000 Brits have finally got a life?

This is why twitter will take over, and is already starting to. People Love twitter as you can access celebs very easily and commuicate with them.

These figures are erroneus and have been take from a tool that is used to measure advertising efficiency or some such, a tool that was never designed to measure active users. I believe facebook may be here to stay, unfortunately.

You have to be a very sad person to love twitter because you can contact celebs.

A manager at my Brothers workplace has just had to resign because on Twitter, she posted a fairly innocuous, but disparaging, comment about a senior manager. Be careful everyone, you are being watched!

I understood the recent departures were due to some sort of photo identifying security type issue, rather than a "I'm bored of it" thing.

(Not on FB, so not down with the kewl kidz)

I don't have an up to date version of this chart, but yes it is apparently worth $100 Billion

Peter Thiel bought 7% for his $500,000, not a bad profit. Can't help but feel like these valuations are just being plucked out of thin air though. How on earth Facebook can really be worth $100 Billion+ (no doubt it will be far more by the time the IPO comes around) is beyond me. But then, I thought Zuckerberg was mad to turn down $2 Billion for it so what do I know.
