"Thousands of teachers have backed a programme of widespread strikes in England and Wales over changes to their pensions.

Members of the National Union of Teachers and the Associations of Teachers and Lecturers are expected to walk out on 30 June.

The unions say the pensions changes will leave them working longer, paying more and getting less when they retire.

The government insists any changes will be fair and affordable to the nation."

Well, it appears to have started, as a lot of people here on NP&E warned.

In extremis, it could go two ways; govt capitualtion (which would ultimately incur the ire of the bond markets), or a very hard-line approach which will make Maggie's union-busting days seem tame.

It will not end well. When will these idiots learn? There is no money, we've spent it and the creditors are circling outside the door wanting to know when we'll pay it back.

I was speaking to a couple of friends who are both teachers the other day about this and asked if they would be supporting the strikes. They both said they probably would because the union was advising it but when I then tried to open a discussion about why they thought the changes were unfair, neither of them had a clue about any of the details. Says it all really. rolleyes

Yep, no wonder kids leaving school have worse basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills than twenty years ago. To think I beleived most of my teachers to be idiots.

...Especially when, for a History lesson, my 15 year old step son is made to watch Inglorious basterds!

You're stting me, right?

I'll allow artistic licence in films of a historic nature, up to a point. Shaving Ryan's Privates wasn;t too annoyingly Hollywoodised, but that film was utter drivel, to the point of being annoying.

I'm sure there still are excellent, inspiring, amazing teachers out there. They must feel like the staffroom is like the Star Wars bar - the freaks are the majority and they are the 'outsiders'.

And "An Inconvenient Truth" for Science, a joke if ever there was one.

Why worry about e-numbers when this level of drivel is served up on a regular basis.

EXACTLY the same experience when I questioned a couple of my wife's teacher mates at a barbecue on the weekend. Striking but no clue at all why. In fact, one of the women said, and I quote, "it'll be nice to have a day off though".

My wife isn't striking as she belongs to the NASUWT and doesn't believe in the idea anyway.

What do we want .....

Longer Holidays

when do we want them....NOW!

Where were the Teachers Unions when the Preivate Sector pensions were getting tax raids and haircuts in value?

Oh yeah, they were voting in droves for Blair and Brown who destroyed them.

Can't see too many people supporting some of the same medicine for the PS workers

Before we all get carried away on generic useless lefty teacher-bashing, I would point to the figures in that article which indicate quite clearly that most teachers do not support a strike. 92% of a 40% turnout, 83% of a 35% turnout and only two out of the three main teaching unions does not add up to anything like a majority.

Anyway, don't mind me. As you were...

Will the silent majority be crossing the picket lines?
