Guaranteed Interview Scheme
Discussion
Has anyone read about the 'Guaranteed Interview Scheme' run by some large employers for those with a disability.
As as long as the minimum criteria for the role is satisfied, an interview is guaranteed.
This strikes me as a little unfair to the rest and creates an uneven playing field in my view.
Now I don't have a disability, and can only imagine the challenges that those who do face in life, but I would want to be selected for my ability to perform the role not on the basis of my condition.

The employer is happy to interview the candidate, the candidate meets the requirements for the job, other candidates are also interviewed, the best candidate gets the job. The problem is ?As as long as the minimum criteria for the role is satisfied, an interview is guaranteed.

American Football teams also have a guaranteed interview scheme for black applicants.
Isn't there a good chance they will be pretty fast?

This year's Men's Olympic 100m final is going to be 'unfair' against me.I mean, it's 'racist', no? I'm going to ask them to chance the rules to make it easier for white guys and just put me in the final. To show you how unfair it is at the moment, I would be the first white finalist for about 30 years!
Fair?
Or is there going to be someone who deserves the spot much more than me who I have just displaced because of the colour of my skin?

Although I see we were thinking the same thing at the same time as you can see from my post above...

A shortlist should be compiled on the basis of paperwork received using objective selection criteria drawn from the person spec in the context of the job description. If being disabled is an essential criterion in the person spec then fine.
That's not to say applicants' paperwork is much use, or that interviews alone work well in discriminating on the basis of ability to do the job (as opposed to ability to be interviewed) but such matters are beside the point.

The problem is that only a fixed number of interviewees can ever be invited, so any shoe-in displaces somebody else who may have been the actual best applicant and as such 'deserved' the job.
Is it, why? I'd interview as many or as few as I thought. No one's going to get the job unless they deserve it.This has been around for years and is a sticking plaster on a problem of discrimination against disabled people but doesn't do much to fix the problem.

100 application (not unheard of in the past while). 99 meet essential and desired requirements. 1 disabled candidate only just meets essential requirements.
Why should you interview the disabled candidate over any of the others (assuming you won't interview all 100?)

Absolutely, it isnt discrmination, positive or otherwise, its positive action, it isnt in itself unfair, as the final placed person should get it on merit and being the best candidate for the job. My experience has been that most people I have talked to (and been involved in training in recruitment and selection process) tend to bang on about the problems of employing someone with a disability. Part of the reason for introducing this practice was because those applicants with a disability listed on their application form, used to get weeded out before interview stage,
its a small step in lots of cases, and I agree about the 'sticking plaster' comment though.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for positive action for people who have been historically passed over or under represented in any areas of life but the support should be 'pushing' these people through, not 'pulling them'.
Give advice, support, training, guidance, work experince, confidence building, tutors, mobility aids, or even financial assistance to those people who require it.
Don't be draconian and say you must interview or hire X amount of disabled people, gay people, ethnic minorities or whatever the diversity buzzword of the year is.

Another example.
100 applicants for a position where the employer only has time available to interview 10.
10 of those applicants meet the minimum requirements and also happen to be disabled.
The employer must now interview all 10 of these applicants even if Superman was amongst the 90 others.
