And we can use the same system as cars (co2 emissions) so the cost would be, erm, £0 biggrin

Besides, if you already pay road tax, why pay it again? When you're cycling, you're not driving.

Anyway, I smell troll as this subject has been done to death.

Oh dear, not again!

http://ipayroadtax.com/

How much should we pay? More or less than a Prius?

Oh wow!

I didn't know I got free road tax for my 2nd car.

I must get a rebate asap....

One assumes that a bike strong enough to support a troll might well do some damage to road surfaces, so maybe specifically for the OP the answer should be yes?

Tell me about it!

Instead of campaigning to pay less tax, there seem to be many here who want MORE tax and beaurocracy.

They could in essence have their RFL at the same rate as 0 emission cars.

I do however there should be a bike insurance introduced.

Why not pedestrians too? I run a lot on our roads, perhaps I should have a tax disc on my trainers.

Seriously though, what would it achieve other than a load more bureaucracy?

I agree with the insurance idea. They (cyclists) get away with ignoring signs and traffic signals, then they hit you and get away with a payout whilst you lose your no claims. Fantastic. Even if it was just a nominal fee of £25 year... But then, how would they enforce it? Copper-bobbies doing spot-checks in cycle lanes? Mini-numberplates and cycle lane cameras?

You'll find lots of cyclists are insured. Unfortunately the cyclists who are insured and the ones that cause damage are rarely the same.

Nobody pays road tax. The roads are paid for by local taxation like council tax, motorways on a national level.

Car drivers pay a car tax it's nothing to do with paying your way or paying to use the roads. Cyclists have exactly the same right and pay their way as much as any car driver.

It eludes you too? He meant VED.

No, it's eluding you. VED is not road tax. VED is just another tax taken by the government and dumped into a general pot.

Cars emitting less than 100g per km of CO2 already pay zero VED, yet the take up just as much space, and wear out just as much tarmac, as cars paying £435.

If there were such a thing as road tax, then you would expect cars to pay the same amount for the same use. But there isn't, so they don't.

Plus the OP's trolling is a moot point, as cyclists emit less than 100g of CO2 per km anyway.

And VED is nothing to do with paying to use the road or paying your way as a motorist. VED contributes to road maintenance as much as tax on smoking or alcohol does.

That's at least three people that have pointed it out to you and a link to another site that explains it.
