An eye for an eye

Wow - harsh sentencing, but I think I like it.
Iranian bloke blinds woman who refused his marriage approaches by throwing acid in her face. His sentence when found guilty? She gets to blind him with acid.
Was just on BBC news but can't find a link.
What do others think - barbaric and no place in modern society, or an effective deterrent to others and a fitting punishment?
Edit: found a link

Yes, how soft and pathetic to not be barbaric and implement measures which have proven time and time again to be ridiculously harmful to society.
Sure. It would be much more civilised to offer the criminal a reward for his hard work, a few encouraging words and release him back to continue his work which is greatly beneficial to society.996c2 said:
I thought this was a good idea until it was pointed out that the world would soon go blind if it was implemented globally.
Ghandi talked a load of crap. This was one of them.Only a tiny fraction of humanity are this nasty. If they knew they'd get the same treatment they would think twice.
More of it, please.

This chap committed the crime knowing this outcome was a possibility.
Do places which have this kind of punishment have lower crime rates?
Probably not. It might (such harsh punishment for deterance) work in the case posted by the OP, but for more common things such as burglary, the stakes are higher, so anyone that does commit it is correspondingly likely to be more desperate to try it - be it through poverty or some other reason. Minefield really. Northernboy's comment is pretty much my point of view, with a small exception.
Dispicable crime commuted and 100% guilty. She was stunning her threw acid on her face blinded her in both eyes and materially changed her facial image.
She was what 18-20?doesn't matter what age though
I wouldn't have any issue in carrying out /holding down this criminal while the punishment was given.
I'd say it may also be a fitting punishment for pedophile and rapists male or female. It certainly sends out a very strong message about what is and is not acceptable as clearly the law and capital punishment inst delivering the goods.
I'd personally add to be steralised and sexual organ removed plus acid in the eyes for pedophiles and rapists.
If they were guilty I'd find it hard to argue against the victim/victims family / general concensus for the punishment.
Now what about robbery? Cut off the hand? In sure that would really put off quite a few especially after punishment had been given to a number. Imagine some will have no hands their lives ruined. Their choice.
Why should the victim always be the one who gets off worst?

From a very young age people in this country do things because they are aware that their actions will be more unpleasant for others than their potential punishment will be for them.
Severe punishment won't stop crimes that are committed as a reaction or out of desperation but it may stop more serious organised and pre-meditated crimes.

Yes, there are no other options, either its let criminals off or incorporate a system that we got rid of in the middle ages when we realised how damaging it was to society, they are the only two options, there are no others.Mr E Driver said:
Perfectly reasonable.
I think victims of burglary should be able to ransack the burglars house and take what they want and sell the stuff to get their money back.
Eye for an eye, why not?
Not sure some dirty pants and a couple of needles will be much good to most people. I think victims of burglary should be able to ransack the burglars house and take what they want and sell the stuff to get their money back.

I prefer the cutting off of hands. Reduced repeat offending opportunities.
Or if the burglar has forced entry via the rear doors maybe the home owner can get someone to do the same to the burglar?
