Not a very helpful thread title for someone trying to avoid a repost, though.

It will certainly buy them a very pleasant form of misery though.

I know this all sounds touchy-feely but I had a victim of a robbery, a chap in his 20s. He had a couple of punches and was hit with a bin. They didn't get away with much, just his watch. He didn't want to go to hospital so I ran him to his parents' place in Moulscombe, a down market council estate in Brighton.

The control room had phoned ahead and by the time I got there the whole family had turned out. One of them had gone around to the victim's wife and told her, and it was really quite remarkable the way they supported one another and the wife. I was forced to have a cup of tea with them, this at gone midnight, while I took a brief statement. The atmosphere was charming. No money to spare but they really seemed to enjoy life.

It was, perhaps, not my idea of an idyll.

I've been to rich people's houses where the whole atmosphere has been cold. A PC once told me when he'd given the report of the unexpected death of the mother to a daughter in a big place, belonging to the decesased, up near Lewes. The woman had then gone straight to a drawer and removed a wad of cash and put it in her handbag. For the next few minutes the PC had to follow the woman around the house, a collecting and indentifying mission. She then demanded that it should be she who told all the relatives. The PC was a bit keen on Art Deco and there were a number of small bits in the house. He said he was tempted to put a bid in for one or two as the women would, no doubt, be happy to sell them and keep the money.

He left the premises, then realised he hadn't told the woman the cause of death and had to go back.

That said, the council house mob was an exception but it did prove that you don't need money to have a pleasant life.

At risk of going way off topic (not that it is an important one) I would agree with that and can think of lots of examples of people that I have met who have perfectly happy and uneventful lives with little or no money.

Sadly the people who have little but stand out (as I have noticed from work and I am sure you will have) appear to be the majority, taking most of the time of enforcement and support giving agencies. The less than pleasant ones also appear to be the folk who steal headlines in sensationalist press and are likely to be content with a benefit life suplemented by illegal income.

I would guess that your financial position has little bearing on your life, but if you are generally happy decent person more money would probably improve that. If you are selfish, greedy, ungrateful, unpleasant etc I would guess £1 or £100,000,000 in the bank wouldn't make a difference.

Although I wouldn't be averse to having the odd million cash in the bank and a mortgage paid off, I can honestly say I wouldn't want anything to do with this kind of lifestyle if the Genie handed over the magic lamp.

I feel qualified to speak on this issue. I can represent the poor but happy side of the argument, and I have met, worked for and even lived in close proximity with, a good many rich people, with fortunes ranging from maybe 20-800 million. The blokes are usually reasonably happy because they continue to work, often being away from home 12 hours a day, business trips abroad etc, so they keep occupied.

It's the wives that tend to have the problems, chief among which is depression. Basically, they have nothing to look forward to. They are already on permanent holiday, they can buy anything they want, every day they get a little older, and the effort of trying to achieve anything tends to be beyond them. The less they do, the less they want to do. Even shopping becomes boring, what would to you or I be a rare treat to them is mundane. Everybody needs a bit of excitement from time to time, and when you are very rich, that can be hard to find, believe it or not.

Ignoring her face, I have to say I think that's quite a sexy picture of Petra - did the dress just happen to fall open like that?

Being rich would enable me to dive with Great Whites, Skydive out the back of a C130, dive Truk Lagoon, swim with Whalesharks, perhaps play in a race series or two (TVR Tuscan challenge anyone?) and so on. I'd find most of that fairly exciting. I would also be able to devote a lot of time to helping certain charities, that would be incredibly rewarding.

Put it this way, it's a risk I would be willing to take.
