Triumphs? Did that last more than 15 seconds? laugh

Super speech.
Indeed. Do we know who wrote it?

A real contrast to his famous tetchiness when challenged in role. More of this speech's style and less of the entitled finance bro would have helped his public image enormously.

Not a great politician but he has sought to soften the final view of him as he heads of to reflect on whatever has become of the Conservative party. I guess demonstrating the level of effort to control the warring factions within the party.

Note that there's a thread that has emerged overnight - Sunak's constituency speech during the night and also Braverman's speech apologising to the nation.

It's been an extremely grubby campaign and I can't help but think all of us could do with some more common decency between politicians. I hope that Starmer reflects the same today (before he and Reeves will inevitably spend as long as they can blaming the last14 years).

As poor a job as I thought he did, that was a good speech.
If ever there was a speech that attempted to reverse the psychology. You are all amazing, I am so terrible, I tried my best, but I love you all still, and this country is so great...perfectly written to get sympathy and people to think 'oh he wasnt such a bad bloke'

... just remember the policy ideas he was coming up with in the last 6 months, he signed off on all those, remember that. Dont fall for the sympathy seeking words of a speech written by a team behind the scenes.

I'm not falling for anything, I didn't vote for him, I am just able to separate my dislike for his party and their antics, with someone making a speech leaving office. I believe he did what he, and his team thought best, and yes, it wasn't what was wanted. It's no deeper than that really.

It wasnt pointed at you directly. More that the reality of it is that he has a speech writing team, probably wrote it days ago, had multiple versions, they picked one. This hasn't come from the Sunak heart nor are the words carrying any weight because of his actions over the last 12 months or so, because the speech doesn't tally up with that.

I think there's some psychology that isn't down the speech writers, but something akin to the opposite of buyer's remorse. Hes-fked-off-relief or something.

None of them write their own speeches, or their own campaigns etc. This was a carefully crafted speech which he has delivered well. Let's face it, he is on the market now to land a plum job, it's not like he is going to be edgy wink

So why did Rishi Sunak call the election when he did (could have held on until the end of the year)?

The only logical explanation I can think of was that there was some kind of plot to remove him from within the Tory party so he hit the self-destruct button.

That is all I can think of, he had had enough, or he knows some bad economic times coming so let labour in and see if they can be a one term government, but would any PM fall on their sword for the greater good? Maybe he just realised he was ste?

The other end of it is that parliament will convene on the 9th to elect the speaker, the Kings speech will not be till the 17th & then they will almost immediately head off for the summer recess till September, so there is unlikely to be much new legislation till then.
