Would have been over far too quickly if they just paid someone in the UK to get rid of him, better an elaborate plan to lure him to a holiday destination, meet up with a female (love interest angle), let him attend a rave, go off with two randoms, then go for a walk, and so on and so on.

Clearly "they" had an eye on the invevitable netflix drama and were worried it would only stretch to a 60 minutes episode if the plot wasn't elaborate enough.

Not only that but also there were a number of guys involved in the machete attack so why go and plan to pop one off over in Tenerife.
Are we going to start seeing each of them being taken out in mysterious ways on lads holidays over the summer months?

Any decent golf courses? Popular resort for all year round weather, plus one can't really expect these foreign chappies to do a decent job looking for the flowers of british youth, they'd be too occupied with their siesta.

Especially as those yearly early summer trips to try out the Portuguese courses have dried up thanks to no one caring about the McCanns anymore.

But Occam’s Razor is very relevant. Why go to all that trouble of faking it using such an elaborate alibi with the Masca Airbnb and walking back, when they could simply dump his body in the sea and deny all knowledge?

If it was established that certain key facts/events were not made clear at the begining, I assume there would be a mechanism to decide whether the money was raised under false pretences? And if so I presume GFM would likely refund whatever was remaining in the pot?

GFM do have a refund policy in cases of fraud or misuse, it's pretty vague as to exactly what constitutes such though
