Nice to see the French, like the Brits, stuck two fingers up at the right-wing gutter party.
So much for "the rise of the right in Europe".
What on earth are you talking about? They didn't do as well as they and the polls expected but they are certainly on the rise, look at the number of seats they have gained. So much for "the rise of the right in Europe".

We lived in France for a number of years but I didn't get involved in their politics. However, French friends used to comment that in the first round of voting they vote "with their hearts" but in the second round they "vote with their heads" and this has proved true again.
Plus the fact that the left wing coalition and Macron’s party worked together and selectively pulled over 200 candidates to help each other out to ensure Le Pen’s party wouldn’t win.And now the leftists are out smashing things up in celebration.

You have to be of a certain age with a penchant for Friday night crap TV on Channel 4 to get the reference.

Hahaha - what a mess he's got to sort out now, co-habiting with people who riot when they lose and riot when they win - anyone but extremists eh? Be interesting to see how he manages all this and how much support the far-left will provide to the ultra-extreme-scary-far right for further down the road...
I like centrists, I think he's made some good calls, but inevitably they get swamped out by the old L/R diehards.

Still good to see the "extremists" have been kept out - which explains all the peace and tranquility in Paris last night.
Oh.
The deals done by Macron to stop Le Penn have led to a hard left group that adores Russia, does not consider Ukraine to be a country and hates NATO and the United States having a grasp on power. They also support China's claim on Taiwan.
Some dark and difficult days ahead for France, caused yet again by inept Politicians

The usual media brainwashing ran on full load to persuade swing voters to vote against the RN, which was never going to get any majority with other runners up pull out on purpose to block them the way - encouraging one's supporters to vote for someone else by pulling out. So much for the support of "Democracy"...
In the end the RN has more MPs than ever before and still got the highest amount of votes, which is rather telling. The mess Micron has deliberately thrown the country in will cement the RN's stronghold further over the long run and once half brained supporters of the far left will realise their mistake they will switch to the RN more easily than one may expect.

It seems likely to me that come the next presidential election, the right will have risen even further and this will be seen as an even bigger mistake than it currently is.

Happy to be corrected but isn't it the case that Labour got more seats than anybody else, and RN came 3rd?
I think perhaps the point being made is that 37% of the second round vote going to RN doesn't exactly constitute much of a rejection. That would be a majority territory under our electoral system. Particularly as it came with the largest grouping being the far left/left wing alliance as the consequence of keeping them out. Apparently less than 20% of French voters want Mélenchon as PM per polling, but he heads up the largest grouping, so who knows what will happen.

It's not a rejection, however under our system it would depend on where the votes came from 37% doesn't guarantee a majority under FPTP, just look at reform 14% = 5 seats vs Libdems on 12% for 72 seats, if your 37% is concentrated in too few seats you don't get in. The Tories + Reform got 38% and only 126 seats between them as an example.
