You could be wounded by an assassin if he had meant to kill you. Although this would make him a would-be assassin if the assissination attempt was an isolated incident. If the gunman in question here is an assassin by trade then Antonov was indeed wounded by an assassin.

That's according to common usage anyway. The word actually derives from the Persian word Hashshashin meaning a militant Ismailite Persian sect, active in the Northern parts of Iran from the eighth to the fourteenth centuries. I doubt the would be killer in this instance was that old, and might well not have been an Ismailite either, though age might explain the poor marksmanship.
