The whole tawdry affair is a microcosm of the last decade of Tory government. Lack of discipline on policy and conduct, removal of sensible and responsible leadership at all levels, individuals looking after themselves rather than the greater good, and whenever something goes wrong try to diminish it's importance, get an inquiry underway launching as far as possible into length grass and style it out. Trouble is, we are all now wise to it, and won't have it any longer. Sunak was literally saying over the weekend that an inquiry was underway and it couldn't be discussed - sorry chum, it just doesn't work any more.
As a (former) Tory voter I am perplexed about what's driving this behaviour though.

Are the people all too close and friendly? Is that the problem? It certainly seemed to be part of the cause of the 'Partygate' behaviour. They couldn't see how their antics looked to people on the outside because they were ALL on the inside.

Is it really that much of a surprise? a political party remaining in power for an extended time has always got so used to being entitled to do things as they wish and once it's obvious (like now) it's the last chance saloon to get their snouts in the trough before they get purged out, some of those are trying their luck to snaffle the last available crumbs.... that was obvious in the last months of the major government, the last months of the brown government and now history, unsurprisingly, repeats itself....

It all contrasts rather with the police officer alleged to have placed a bet. He was arrested ( one wonders why) and has been suspended since the allegations emerged.
Because he is getting done for misconduct in public office...
Hardly the only one. That is the point.
Which brings us back to the point of politicians being essentially unregulated, and their - non criminal - behaviour being governed internally - even the initially lauded Miisterial Code has been routinely flouted, and anyone who has been found in breach after investigations lasting years has had little more than knuckes rapped, and then welcomed back into governemt after a brief sabatical. It all needs to be updated.

Is there any difference in law between a PC and an MP as regards 'Public office"?
If the Pc was arrested why haven't the MPs been treated in the same manner.
( A rhetorical question: We all know the answer)

So apparently it’s been alleged it’s someone in the Met that leaked details of the gamblers.
The Tories really are divorced from reality if they think this will deflect anything away from them.

I can't imagine anyone is anything but thankful it was leaked.
Exactly, which is why I can't see it as a diversion, it's a non-starter.

If a Met officer blew the whistle, well done to them.
Let’s all make it normal for people accused of any wrong doing, anything at all, to have their names ‘leaked’ out. They deserve all they get, trial by media for all. Indeed why don’t we just support a weekly release of all those arrested and what for during the previous seven days. What a wonderful society that would create!

Pretty sure we are actually releasing some of those who have been convicted - because the prisons are full! Broken Britain.

How could a prospective Labour MP have got the nod about 4 July when most of the cabinet were in the dark? Curious!

Kevin Craig - Central Suffolk & North Ipswich.

ETA that’s Dan Poulter’s seat - elected Con, defected to Lab in 2024, not standing.
