Get Sky or DVD Rental?
Discussion
Moving to a new place soon and the room comes with a Freeview box, but the other current flatmates (can't afford my own place, sadly) currently have basic Sky multiroom, which I can be added to for a bit extra a month on top of my rent (because all bills are included in my rent).
Now the main difference that I can see between Freeview and basic Sky is that the Sky option has lots of shopping channels and a bunch of foreign language channels, none of which I'll use.
Can anyone confirm that this is infact the case or am I missing something on the various websites?
I'm now looking at using one of the DVD rental sites that have now sprung up, instead of going with Sky. Currently it's a choice between Tesco DVD Rental which is powered by Lovefilm.com, or Lovefilm itself. Anyone used these? Which would you recommend? Or should I skip both and go for Blockbuster? Do you get DVDs fairly regularly or will I be paying £10 a month to get one DVD if I'm lucky?
Or should I give renting the DVDs a miss and go for the basic Sky thing and use it to learn to speak a different language and spend money on cheap crap on TV?

I moved into a new flat and had choice of getting sky, and went for freesat and lovefilm. Apart from the sport I do not miss the world of pointless channels one bit, and with on demand through my tv I can watch my pick of lovefilm, iplayer, 4od, or five catchup. Best savings (or not spending) I have made.
At the moment I'm setting a few nights a week when there's not much on telly to watching DVDs that have sat on the shelf since I bought them and never been watched. Once they're done (and it may take a while
) I might go for Lovefilm. What's the quality like of their streaming service? I've got the option on my PS3 and my Samsung TV.

I suppose that is an option but there's too much faffing about for me. I'd rather save that time, spend a fiver a month and use LoveFilm instead.Online streaming movies are the future but most of our broadband connections aren't really up to realtime HD streams yet. I know mine certainly isn't.

this!Cable into TV, or stream it via a media box. Job done.
Google 'watch movies online' - First result

I am using XBMC. If you dont want hidef its the best re-use of an XBOX.

The quality is pretty good, and haven't had an issue with block pixels as yet. Though I had a voucher for Sony's Qriocity and they can stream in HD, which was noticeably better than LoveFilm.
