The Oscars is nothing more than a self-congratulatory, Hollywood love-in, so why do the British news media think that we, the public, share their obsession with it?

The films that win Best Picture are nearly always current box office hits anyway, so it’s not as if it’s bringing more obscure films to the publics’ attention; just more box office revenue for the studios current Blockbusters.

Anyway, for all those who want The King’s Speech to win Best Picture this year, here are the nominees in its category:

Best Picture: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, Winter's Bone

And the rest of the love-in major categories (can’t wait for the speeches):

Actor in a Leading Role: Javier Bardem, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Colin Firth, James Franco

Actress in a Leading Role: Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Michelle Williams

Directing: Black Swan, The Fighter, The King's Speech, The Social Network, True Grit

I don't care about any of those types of award ceremonys.

Children of Courage, Police Bravery Awards and so on are far, far more important.

As a movie fan THE OSCARS is the ultimate of what the best film is (or should have been, in Hollywood). Its good from a historical point of view as when choosing old films to watch I often go back and look at what was nominated in the past years.

I think films in general are not as good as they were in the past coupled with the media obession problem makes it all less prestigious nowadays.

It's a celebrity-media cluster-wk fest

If the BBC pour attention over the Oscars, those winning etc are probably more likely to accept BBC requests and offers of appearances on their shows.

In addition, the whole media industry seems to be about promoting eachother to maintain jobs / create celebrity jobs (look at all of the celebrity-on-ice / celebrity get me out of here nonsense) and force-feed the public into treating them as royalty. So yeah, the Oscar obsession is purely self advertising.

Can you tell I hate celeb-culture? laugh

The news media are.
Let them. There is sufficient alternative media around these days to avoid it. Even if it crops up on the news I can mentally shot it out for a few minutes. It's not a big deal really.

Having an interest in film tends to make it worth a look- doesn't mean people are obsessed.

I watched a thing on SkyNews this morning. Companies out there have "freebie days" where they give clothes/perfumes/assorted tat to nominees. One of the nominees was shameless in loving it.

Not what you know....
