One of the mainly American yahoo-groups that I subscribe to has just been chatting about the new american TOP GEAR programme. They seem to really like it (but then they also like the american version of the office!). Someone suggested an alternative presenter line up, so here's my suggestion.

Norm Abraham
Martha Stewart
Captain Sig (the Nordic looking captain from Deadliest Catch).

Who would you choose?

Jay Leno surely has to be on there?

Top Gear US already has a comedian, so presumably you'd rather he was dropped?

The guy in question (Adam Ferrara) had the balls to get an unmodified 500ci Cadillac Coupe DeVille so far into the air over a dirt jump (Season1, episode 3) that when it landed, the chassis visibly bent (looked like a banana).

I'd rather they didn't remove him, he has some character.

The other presenters are Tanner Foust (D1 drifting champion, a very handy driver) and Rutledge Wood, a sort of whiney version of James Allam.

Can you see where I'm going with this?

Edited to add: I found a photo of said act -

...sure, everyone likes Leno. Frankly, I think he could have a good second career presenting motoring programmes if the bottom ever falls out of talking to Hollywood stars.

I actually think that the 3 presenters are pretty perfect as is. I'd even venture that US Top Gear is better than the UK version (aside from Clarkson).

Think they need to replace Rutledge Wood, the one episode I watched seemed to be dominated by him whining about the Aston he was testing. I'm all for constructive criticism but he was relentless, nothing was good enough.

They're all competent presenters individually but they don't really gel together, IMO. All of them seem very reserved (maybe nerves and a case of finding their style) and as a result there's not a lot of camaraderie right now. Maybe with time this will improve.

That said, the show is still pretty watchable and considerably better than the 'modern' Top Gear was on the BBC for the first few series.

Also I reckon, better than the Aussie effort.

the group as it is is growing on me - you have to keep tanner for the driving ability, and adam does have his moments, even if the studio pieces are pretty scripted.

Rutleidge is a bit whiny though - i think swap him for someone else.

Still not as good as Topgear UK IMO, but on a par with top gear Australia (interested to see how they both develop)

Im just thankful theres a new episode of top gear three times as often now! biggrin

Have they stopped making Top Gear in Russia now?

I'm pretty sure American Top Gear will get good, UK Top Gear took ages.

This.
He has a column in octane magazine.
He said he was asked, but he said it would never be a patch on the UK top-gear, so he declined.

fk no. He probably knows less about cars than he does about fighting.

Anyone less annoying than Clarkson and Hammond...so, most people would do.

I'd be interested to watch some of their efforts. Dave will show it sooner or later, surely?

Don't know, but in the clip I watched on YouTube a somewhat wooden trio of 'boorish one', 'earnest one' and 'boyish one' appeared to be having a rather contrived comedy parking mishap.

Is the US version similarly formulaic? If so, let's see the bit where an AMC Pacer 'accidentally' clobbers a Pinto.

(ETA: illustrative links)

Tanner Foust is a pretty good driver imo.

At least he has experience racing various types of motorsport!

More than could be said about 'our' presenters!

Really?

Seeing as he had this designed for him by Chip Foose and built by Troy Trepannier, I'm going to call you out on that one.

There was an episode of Rides on Discovery devoted to this build. Rogan knows his cars.
