Al Murray, eye opener
Discussion
Love Al Murray, seen him twice live, love his show, always assumed the pub landlord was basically a facet of his persona.
Sat here tonight bored flicking through the many channels of s
te, spy "Al Murrays German Adventure"on BBC4, think to myself that will be funny, the pub landlord being rude and obnoxious in various awkward german scenarios.
How pleasantly wrong was I, no skin head or red blazer, just an interesting and eloquant gentleman with a full beard and head of hair looking into two centuries of german history!
More than a lttle confused I googled old Al only to find that he is actually an Oxbridge educated historian of fairly noble blood. Respect level has been elevated tenfold, the man is a genius.

He is not in any way a genius. He's been doing history progs for years, esp. on Discovery. Have you been living in a cave? Eloquent.
Evidently have been living in a cave, NEVER seen this side of him. Or maybe I have a life and don't spend my life glued to satelite TV.Really enjoyed this recent series about Germany too, shame it was only 2 episodes.
As for 'The pub landlord' - I wasn't his biggest fan in the early years (found it all abit shouty and repetative) but really starting to enjoy now.

Their German season has been fantastic.

Keep an eye for his 'Road to Berlin' series (usually gets repeated on one of the digi stations). He really is in his element when talking about war history. I thought he did an excellent job.
It is compelling viewing - it was on Discovery History in the last week or two.Vvroom said:

It was finding Al Murray on the channel doing what he was that suprised me not the channel itself!
It just shows how TV can lure an audience into thinking that the persona they see on the screen is somehow indicative of the character of the person themselves. TV has a terrible propensity to "pigeon hole" people and it can take quite an effort for the comedian/actor/presenter to break away from an image that they have started their TV careers with. There are many examples of this going right through TV history.
The other day, I was listening to actor Robert Lindsay being inrerviewed and he was saying how diffiocult it was for him to get away from his "Citizen Smith" character and it took him about four years. In fact, he initially gave up TV and returned to stage work ("Me and My Girl") deliberately to make people forget "Wolfie".
He says people still shout across the street to hom "Power to the people".
