Had an email from them saying you can now watch films online on the PS3 in "near dvd quality". Anyone tried it yet? I installed a software update on mine this morning but still no sign of a lovefilm icon in the video menu. Not had time for a proper play yet though.

That would be good, depends how quick the downloads are though. I generally find the PS slow with software updates (10mb fibre optic)

Says they're live streaming rather than download

watch a lot of stuff on iplayer through the PS3 and find it works very very well- will be interested to see how love film gets on though- interesting pricing though- i get 2 hours of streaming per month. Wonder what happens to movies that are 2.5 hours long? do i get to pick the half hour that i'll miss?

I use iPlayer a lot through the PS3. Having Lovefilm would be great. I've also heard rumours of ITV player coming soon, is this true?

I tried it last night, as I'd tried it on the laptop and was non-plussed.

However, I have to say that the film start in about 5 seconds and stream perfectly.

Quality wise it was better than I expected. Of course, it is not blu-ray quality by any means, but I was watching on a 63 inch TV and is perfectly watchable and I would say almost DVD quality.

I really was quite impressed. The quality is just as good as the quality that you often get from illegal streaming if not better, and the 2000 films are there when you want them. A few years ago I was sure that their business plan was to send out DVDs at cost price or a loss leader to build market share so when streaming comes in they are at the forefront.

A dedicated link on the PS3 is a genius move and a real coup IMHO.

When they can offer the same but at say 720p then they *really* have something great, but for proof of concept it works well.

is this in line with BT's fibre rollout project?

how much downstream bandwidth is used to get the max resolution available from lovefilm?

Had a quick look this evening and seems the quality is variable. Tried 2 films and one showed a massive amount of digitisation artefacts, particular in large areas of black, the other film was much better quality but the fast forward/rewind/pause buttons froze on me. I'm on 10MB broadband from Virgin.
