Hopefully the cancellation of Caprica will bring the new show forward a bit.

was not aware caprica was cancelled, considering how BSG ended can not see any chance of it restarted, but guess going back in time like caprica did is the key smile

It was dropped this week. The final five (ironic!) episodes in the US will be shown in the New Year.

No news on what Sky plan to do about the remaining episodes yet.

Hopefully the new series will be better than Caprica. Just couldn't get into it like I did with BSG.

Think I'll purchase that book too.

I think Caprica got it's target audience completely wrong. I enjoyed it in an "Oh, that's interesting" way. But as a mate of mine said, it was just too "teeny-bopper"'ish. They took too long getting to the gritty interesting part, which may have been about to start at the end of season 1. Hopefully we'll get the last five episodes here though, and hopefully the new series, will be more action and less soap opera.

I didn't realise what was wrong, but yeh it was too 'teenybopperish'. I don't wish to see early 20 summat actors, BSG was packed with grizzled veterans.
That is also the problem with SGU, why don't producers know better shows get made when you have decent actors in believable roles. Don't get me started on teenage Merlin/Robin Hood st either.

Caprica could have been good.

I can still see them going back to BSG, they still have to survive on the planet and shag homo-erectus don't forgetbiggrin

In hindsight, I agree.

I have to say I liked Caprica, and hoped it would be around for a few seasons as that was certainly the pace they were aiming for.

If you look back at BSG, the first few proper episodes (after the pilot) were about reasonably mundane things:

What would the stress of jumping to to the passengers? What would the stress of lack of resources do to the passengers? What would economics or politics be like in such a situation? How would we deal with enemy combatants?

Caprica was similar in that respect because in the first ten episodes it was really just setting the scene to get the viewer to believe and understand the 'world' in terms of religion, society and technology.

As someone who has studied academically things like postmodernism, futurism and how that relates to technology and society, I found the in depth look into the reality of 'virtual worlds' and how those themselves would develop and how they would change the 'real world' very well thought out. Of course, that unwittingly being the spur to solve the much bigger issue of AI was a nice twist.

I think what had happened was they filmed the first half and waited for the ratings and from that they would plan another season or two or close it off.

IMHO it was perfectly paced for two or three really interesting seasons with maybe the first Cylon war happening in season 3 and the whole story them filled in. Instead it would seem that the next 5 episodes will just finish up the backstories and end up with (most likely) a chilling end scene with the disgruntled first Cylon (the daughter) working out how to make copies...

I agree, it felt like a fully developed world.
Shame that the channel it runs on acts the way it does vis-a-vis ratings. If it was HBO it would simply plough on.

Caprica is a spinoff prequel which takes place over 50 years before Battlestar Galactica. In a society of peace, the Twelve Colonies are on the verge of a major technological breakthrough - merging artificial intelligence with a mechanical body to create the first Cylon. Following the lives of two families, the Adamas and the Graystones, Caprica blends action with corporate conspiracy and sexual politics. Caprica, the anticipated prequel to .Battlestar Galactica,. will have its world premiere exclusively on DVD on April 21, 2009 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. In a groundbreaking move, the feature-length prequel will be available on DVD as a limited-edition uncut and unrated version before the series broadcast premiere on the Sci Fi channel in 2010.

With Caprica getting cancelled, there's a chance Ron Moore might get involved with this BSG spin off. However this new series seems to just be a longer working of the webisodes that eventually found their way into 'Razor'. He might see it as just re-treading old territory. A better plan would have been to do a special feature on the original 5 and how Cavil started the Cylon rebellion on their home planet 2000yrs previously.

The Five created Cavil after they left Earth.

Thanks - missed that bit somehow. I thought he'd been instrumental in the uprising on 'Earth' knowing he would benfit from the abandoned resurrection technology that the 5 had discovered. Cavil and the remaining 6 models were all duplicates of people that the 5 knew on 'Earth'. Still make a good 2 hour one off feature though.

Yeh it would. From what I recall the timeline is five turned up over the colonies and introduced themselves to the Cylons who were busy making war on the colonials. The Old style Cylons stopped fighting in return for resurrection/human bodies, and so the five made the eight basing them on people from Earth. Cavil killed the whole batch of Daniel and the eight became seven, and somehow Cavil managed to dupe the original five seed them on Caprica and erase memories of them in all other Cylons. Pretty intricatebiggrin
I think any stories going back here would be ace...sadly it would require the same actors and is prolly the reason why we won't see any.

edit
In fact I reckon a story on Kobol would be great, the original Cylons plus the humans plus the Gods?

Ah, remember bits of it now. Cavil (or John to give him his proper name) 'killed' the original 5 by suffocating them in a room and then 'boxed' them before they could resurrect so he could tinker with their memories. The 5 actors are still young enough to pull off the roles. They could explain the aging away pretty easily.
