If your thinking about maybe upgrading, do it. This new version looks amazing and the extras are exceptional. Well worth the money.

Got it.

Yes it's very good, but unfortunately the poor background effects in Aliens in particular are more noticeable now that

definition has increased.i.e. the scene where the shuttle crashes into the planets surface after the pilot is killed.Oh dear.

In general very good though.

your talking about a 20 year old film. You did realise all along that it was all make believe, dont you? Give them a break, most stuff thats 'perfect' visually turns out to be utter rubbish (like the three later Star Wars films).

I'm assuming you've watched the new version.

The scene I'm referring to is actually 'Gerry Anderson' bad.

Course it's real.Silly.

Alien looks amazing, it is like a film made yesterday, Aliens not so good, the blacks are quite grainey, not got on to the others but there are two different versions per disc and two discs just for extras not including the extras on each disc with the films. If you like the Alien films you will be pulling yourself round the room to this box set!!

I've seen a few films recently on newer HD TVs where the backgrounds look rubbish and it almost feels like you're there at the filming. I've got an old LCD TV and Blu-Ray looks OK with that so I wondered if it has something to do with the 100-200hz refresh rates on newer sets?

+1

I watched I Am Legend on DVD on my HDTV, nothing to note.
Eventually got A PS3 with the Blue Ray Version included. The part at the start when driving through the city in the Mustang is quite noticable as being computer generated (the city). This is something that wasnt obvious on the DVD version.

Sometimes Hi Def delivers too much.

However I have an HD version of The Abyss and it's very good.Different/more advanced type of CGI? (1989)

Well I think films made 20 years ago can't really be expected to cope well with HD, BUT the flipside of that is I expect more recently made films to be excellent in Blue Ray...

Out of interest OP, what kind of stuff is included in the extras? I already have the box set on DVD so is it worth it?

As I understand it, HD has only just got to the point where resolution is comparable to 35mm cinema film, so BluRay should now give you the same picture that was available only in the cinema 20 years ago.

What you can see at home also depends on how big your screen is and how close to it you sit. I reckon sitting about 8-10 feet from my 72" screen gives about the same field of view as I would get half way back in my local multiplex.

My point here is that I would have thought BluRay should not show up many details on 1980s films that were not visible in the original theatrical experience?

You're right,it wouldn't.In the scene I refer to it's the actual PHYSICAL background that is poor.Never saw it in the cinema though to compare,

just CRT def (480?) where it was unnoticeable, then 720p,where I noticed it first time.Brilliant film though.
