Hi All,

I am going on holiday soon and would like a good book to read nerd. I have no interest in reading at home but there is something nice about reading on holiday!

I don't really know what I am after confused. I quite like the idea of reading a "diary" of someone who fought in WWII or something similar. Also a good war/espionage thriller would be great to take.

So what's everyone reading, and what do you recommend? Feel free to recommend books that doesn't fit into the forementioned categories if they are worth reading!

Thanks!

'Lion Rampant' by Robert Woollcombe is brilliant.

as are

'Troop Leader' by Bill Bellamy
and
'Ill Met by Moonlight' and 'War of Shadows' by W. Stanley Moss

(All WW2)

I've also just finished 'The Escaping Club' by A J Evans which is about POW camp escapes in WW1. Great book, but quite rare.

If you like science...try any book by Simon Singh....fermatts last theorem, the big bang theory, codebook...All great reads. I dont read fiction and only really on hols...they may sound heavy but not as bad as stephen hawking. He writes so joe average can understand !!!!

For WWII 'diaries' I can recommend The Forgotten Soldier by Guy Sajer. This is a truly harrowing account of the life of a German soldier on the Eastern Front.

If you're interested in the subject of the Eastern Front, then Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor is the daddy of them all.

Edited to add a proper link for Stalingrad with reviews

Serious answer.
Although they don't fit into your categories very well, any of the Wilbur Smith books are excellent holiday reads.
I would suggest River God or Birds of Prey.

Thanks all! Most of WWII I find interesting even though its a massive subject, I find reading history books boring so prefer to read it from one man's eyes rather that just plain facts. All seem to be great recommendations, keep them coming!
