yes The CG's pretty good - no pretence of reproduction but it's nice and clear.

Man I wish we'd had stuff like this in GCSE history...

But...but...but...
The BBC are all communists, this is probably brainwashing or something.
Honest, I read it on PH so it must be true.
Bet the communists win in "their" version of history...huh!

I could never understand why they didn't concentrate on Moscow instead. They got to within sight of it, then decided to duff up Stalingrad instead. Yet another reason why Hitler didn't win.

NB You can see an original bulding from the battle on Google Earth at 48°42'56.25"N 44°31'58.21"E

'Pavlov's House (дом Павлова - dom Pavlova in Russian) became the name of a well-defended apartment building during the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942-1943. It gained its popular name from Sergeant Yakov Pavlov, who commanded the platoon that seized the building and defended it throughout the battle.'

Seconded, read it twice now. The best book on this vital and utterly bloody battle. I can only describe it as man's vision of hell on earth.

I thought the Battlefields programme was very good on describing the battle as it unfolded but didn't concentrate on the weapons enough which were decisive. The Russians had plenty of T-34 and "Stalin's Organ" which the devestated the German lines. Also, whilst they mentioned the cold winter, it was one of the coldest ever, the Germans supply lines were seriously overstretched and their flanks defended by no more than inferior Eastern European German 'annexes' or conscription division.

Not a bad programme though. Loved the demo in the use of snipers.

It is indeed.

All the more impressive when you read his follow-up 'Berlin', which is complete rubbish. Yes, the Red Army gang-raped it's way across Eastern Germnay and into Berlin, but literally every page reminds you of it, and it gets tiresome.

It's quite remarkable how history seems to repeat; Hannibal had the chance to take Rome, and change the cause of history, after the Battle of Cannae, but chose not to!

There have been some very good books and programs, especially on the History Channel, relating to the hell that was Stalingrad.

Hmm, the Germans were no better, they raped their way through the Soviets satellites (they were considered sub-human) and some even joined up to fight with Hitler. Thanks to Stalin's collectivisation of agriculture in the 1930s, pardon the pun, but he almost sowed the seeds of his defeat at that point. The Germans met little resistance through the Ukraine.

Then the Soviets exacted their revenge all the way through its own satellites and into Eastern Germany and the Balkans.

The allies knew Berlin would be a bloodbath and Stalin wanted his revenge.

Produced in the Soviet Union in 1962, this documentary compiles the work of 50 Soviet combat photographers, who filmed the battle of Stalingrad. (1hr 15mins)

Takes about 3-4 mins to get going. Let it load up then scroll through to the parts of interest rather than watch the whole thing.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4562967572...

There a surprisingly large amount of full length old feature films on Google Video.

It was all a part of his cunning plan to cut off the Russian oil supplys and bag them for ze Germanz

Because President Moscow wasn't the leader of the Soviet Union at the time. wink

Oh and something about industry, oil, minerals, Volga supply routes and strategy.

Due to a demanding baby I missed it (it was on in the back ground but I was too busy contending with crying / puking / changing nappies to watch it).
Can any one advise if it is repeated on bbc3 / bbc4?
