Recasting a Perfectly Cast Role.

Sometimes an actor is so suited to the character, people say they can’t imagine anyone else.
So let’s try and recast an actor who was perfect in an iconic role.
I will start with a tough one. Robert Downey Junior as Iron Man. It was like he was born to play Tony Stark. He was so good they built a multi billion dollar franchise around him.
But suppose he turned down the role.
My first thought was Pierce Brosnan. He has the charm and looks of the comic book Stark. I reckon he could have worked. But was probably too old at the time.
So I am going to suggest Christian Bale. He was already playing a billionaire superhero at the time, and proved he can carry a franchise.
A very different actor. Undoubtedly if he had been given the role, the MCU might have headed in a more serious direction from the start.
But I reckon it could have worked.

It's a funny one this: suppose they'd cast Steve Evans as Iron Man and Robert Downey Junior as Captain America, would we all be saying they were miscast and should have been the other way round? I guess you just get used to them in those roles so it's difficult to see someone else doing the same role. I mean - can anyone imagine anyone doing Tony Soprano better than Gandolfini? That's right up there as being one of the most perfect castings of all time, imho. The funny thing being he wasn't actually that famous when the show started.

Ryan Reynolds - Deadpool. It was written in the comics 10 years before the CGI test 'leak' in 2014 that led to the Deadpool movie in 2016, complete with a typo on his name

Recasting. Maybe Jason Sudekis for someone who isn't already a main Marvel movie character (he voices a character in the Hit-Monkey animation series). Paul Rudd or Chris Pratt if Ant Man or GOTG weren't around already at the time.

Captain Jack Sparrow - Johnny Depp. I honestly can't think of anyone else who would have been as good for that role? I do wonder if that was the way they envisioned the character to be played or whether that was pretty much all him.
It was all him according to those who worked on the film.Re Iron Man/ Tony Stark. Ralf Fiennes I reckon.

Some roles just suit certain actors, male and female. And it can be in any type if movie, from big budget to lower budget.
Some actors have a screen presence a role needs, I doubt at times it is even intended but for you the viewer, they have, and it can be. very powerful.
I think casting is a hugely important role in film, and so many get it wrong, and some perfect castings are accidents.

Talking of Connery …Once he was established as Bond, apparently many people had the same view that Bond was Connery, and no one else would do. Even though his portrayal didn’t match the books. But obviously they did recast to keep the franchise going.
For what it’s worth, I think Bond could have been a success even if Sean Connery never played the role.
In From Russia With Love, Robert Shaw plays a villainous counterpart. I could see him as the original Bond. He has everything Connery brought to the role. Handsome, charismatic, a cruel streak.

Pre 2008, there are rumours and stories that the first target to play Iron Man was Tom Cruise, but his pay was too much for what was going to be a risk with the initial Marvel films as Iron Man wasn't well known at the time. So let s try and recast an actor who was perfect in an iconic role.
