I think the real reason he wasn't is that the Broccolis tended to opt for relatively (but not totally) unknown actors to play Bond. Although Roger Moore had done a bit of TV and a few films, he didn't have the profile that Collins had. The Professionals was exceptionally popular in the US, Canada, Australia, etc. That and the fact there was a lot of similarity in the two roles likely swayed the thinking.

Roger Moore, relatively unknown? The Saint was pretty big around the world ending with primetime slots in the USA and the UK. I think the real reason he wasn't is that the Broccolis tended to opt for relatively (but not totally) unknown actors to play Bond. I was going to mention the Persuaders, but that was a bit of a flop in the USA. Which is a real shame as I would have loved a 2nd series as it is one of my all time favourite TV series. I watched the whole series again a year or so ago on Great TV (I think it was that one).Venisonpie said:

Moore played the part for far too long, he looked old in later films, and it is rather pervy now seeing a mid 50s man running around with very young girls in a movie, his 80s films are easily the worst Bond films, someone like Collins would have injected much needed youth and more relevant age into the franchise.
None of this is Rogers fault of course, he loved it, the writing and scripts were poor.
Dalton was much needed, but perhaps should have been in 2 films before he was
