I found out today that Robert Downey Jr is 5"8', I don't know why but that surprised me.
Then I found out that Martin Freeman is 5"6 and Gervais is 5"8'. Blown away.

Any other surprises, both tall and short, that you found out recently?

Primary actors are cast first. Supporting actors are then cast according to their height relative to the primary actors, unless there is creative reason not to. Ideally, actors should all be broadly the same height otherwise it becomes difficult to compose and sometimes light the scenes they are in together.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is shorter than he always proclaimed. He only looked tall because most good body builders are short.

He's listed as 6'3" in most places but I don't think he actually breaks the 6' mark.

Wouldn't Tom Cruise be the obvious one?

But if you watch his films he always looks about the same height as the other actors. Presumably he insists on camera angles etc to avoid making him look short.

Al Pacino is short.

Tom Hardy is fairly average height.

Tallest leading man I can think of is Liam Neeson. Elizabeth Debicki (Tenet, The Crown) is tallest actress i've seen on screen.

He's known to have shoe lifts to boost his height.

Simon Cowell has them too and wears Cuban heels, which are then teamed with boot cut, too long trousers to cover his shoes which ironically due to that style not being great for someone of a shorter stature, it actually emphasis how short he is.

Arnold is closer to 5ft 10. He isn’t 6ft.

Most of them are smaller than you imagine.

Sean Penn, Daniel Radcliffe, Al Pacino, Jack Black, James McEvoy are all very short.

Is it not also the case that actors' height is measured with shoes?

I recall when Daniel Craig was being first playing Bond. He was a claimed 5' 11" at that time. However when I went to a Bond exhibition, with one of his dinner suits on display, I estimated him to be below 5' 9" and with an approximate 38" chest.

Needs a booster seat for his Astons?

Grappling hook from his watch to get items from the top shelf in the supermarket?

If you take a closer look it can be quite easy to spot an actor wearing lifts or even heals. Al Pacino and RDJ are probably the two most prominent I've seen.
The camera angles things are shot at can be deceiving too of course, anything where you're looking 'up' at an actor potentially gives a different perception.

Generally, as the generations go on people get taller, something which really irks me is when they cast adult children shorter than their parents.

‘Ticket to Paradise’ , when arguably one of Hollywood’s best looking couple, George Clooney 5’11” and Julia Roberts 5’9” are cast as the warring divorcee parents to adult daughter Kimberly, petite Arielle Carver-O'Neill 5’4” FRO.

Probably the most notable, AJ and Meadow in Soprano’s, I guess their future height may have been a little difficult to predict, a quick look at their real life parents may have given a clue though.

I fail to see what is surprising that the height range of actors is no different than the height range of doctors or binmen, but we all like the tales of shortish leading men insisting that the casting dept. ensure that onscreen females be shorter than them.

Oh bugger, Kelly McGillis, Sigourney Weaver and Nicole Kidman are auditioning for the role

I'm 6'5" and I've met Schwarzenegger twice. I'd say he's around 6'1" but with excellent posture.

Thank you, my friend! You know, it’s great when people understand the real facts—especially about my height! You handled it like a true champion. I appreciate it. And meeting you? Fantastic! Stay strong, stay focused, and keep lifting people up, just like you did for me. I’ll be back.

Yep, I heard they had to use a few inventive camera angles to give the impression of Bane dominating Bale's Batman in DKR

Tom Cruise is interesting because they let him play Jack Reacher who is described in the books as 6' 5" and 250lbs. That is not Tom Cruise we all know that but the guy who plays the character in the tv series is closer to the mark, Alan Ritchson is i believe, 6' 3". The new series is based upon a book where one of the bad guys dwarfs Reacher and the guy they got to play him is a monster, Dutch actor Olivier Richters is 7' 1" tall. yikes

Audie Murphie, the most decorated US soldier in WW2 and post War film star stood 5 feet five inches tall.

Directors would dig a trench in the ground for his female co-stars to stand in to level the heights. They also used boxes for Murphy to stand on.
