Last radio show for JW today. Sadly he's really very poorly but I hope he gets to enjoy some retirement. Thanks Johnny.

I heard the sign-off clip they played on the news- I didn't even recognise the poor guy's voice.

I found it a very sad programme , it's not like he was just retiring.

As a lad I listened to him on Radio Caroline, and liked him ever since.
It was just luck I heard Elaine Paige saying it was his last show, so I had to listen.

I remember Caroline too, was it not Johnnie who did the wind down there too. Can't recall if it was the midnight change from "legal" pirate to "illegal" pirate or the total closure or when the Mi Amigo started to sink.

I only realised during his last show that the only time that I heard his lunchtime Radio 1 show was during his final week when “Don’t go breakin’ my heart” was his record of the week. I had a day off work to go to Henley.

In those days sexy calendars on the office walls were normal. But the possibility of a radio playing out loud was zero.

I heard the last hour of the Sunday show and was thinking "too much country rock" but then he redeemed himself with Yes's "And You And I". My wife at one point said "this is a long song" and I then explained to her that this was from Yes's 'Close To The Edge' album, a prog masterpiece that is probably the pinnacle of its genre. This was a risky thing to do as she was driving and she could have dozed off.

That Yes track was just superb, first live band I ever went to see back in 1973, very accomplished musicians
