Some movies work with a sequal after a very long time (Top Gun did) but if the news reports of a sequal to The Goonies is true Sloth is going to be a very old man by now hehe

Worse that that - he’s dead.

I suppose the good thing about all these sequels of 80s classics is that you don’t have to watch them.

They need to stop remaking classics just to reap some Millenial dough.

I won't be watching, it's on a hiding to nothing.

I'm going to do something controversial and wait and see

What it's about
Who is in it
Who wrote it
Who is directing it

Before deciding if I'm going to watch it.

The Goonies is pretty sacrosanct so it'll need to be good.

Frightnight.

Mind, Colin Farrell was in two of those st remakes, so maybe if he isn't in the new Goonies (Twonies?)
It'll be ok.

Having said that, sometimes belated sequels do work; Maverick has been mentioned and I'd throw Tron Legacy in there as well. But both those two had the same director.

Conclusion: If Colin Farrell isn't in it, and it's directed by Joseph Kozinkski it'll be good!

The older I've gotten, the more I realise that a lot of media is a product of its time and should be left there for us to enjoy.

This is going to be a sequel though isn't it, not a remake. Goonies is one of my fav films...I definitely wouldn't be interested in watching a remake [unless it's very very good] but might be up for a sequel.

'Sequel' and 'remake' seem to be interchangeable terms today.

Well, one is continuation of the story and the other is re-doing the originally story/starting again. Whatever they do, we know it won't be a patch on the original film. It's impossible! Doesn't stop them trying though [Jurassic Park/Alien/Predator/Ghostbusters/Bad Boys.....!].

hehe Thanks for the clarification. The point is, that most 'sequels' are nothing more than a lazy remake. Essentially the same movie as the original, just more poorly executed. They follow the same formula, and may superficially develop the narrative, so can be marketed as a sequel, they are unimaginative, and will have almost exactly the same story arc.

Hmm.

My aaaumption is that it will be crack, but to be fair to poster above, or coop was watchable and total recall was ok-ish.

Would I prefer it if they’d made something original? Of course! Would I go into a Simon Peggy-esque rage and punch a small child a la phantom menace? No.

…but if I ever meet the chap who sanctioned the remake of taking of Pelham 123, I’d happily kick him in the shin.

I can't think of a modern film that has fantasy mixed in with reality like that. Can anyone think of anything in the last ten years that feels like the Goonies did? Do we even know how to make kids films like that anymore?

Everything these days seems to have to have an angle; a certain loss of innocence. Just don't see how a modern Goonies would work.

You just know that it would be the now-adult originals, embittered and estranged, and brought together again by an adventure that their own kids have. Some crap like that.

Stranger Things (TV Series) – While not a film, this series has strong Goonies vibes with a group of kids discovering supernatural mysteries in their small town. It's filled with nostalgia for the '80s.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold (2019) – This live-action adaptation of Dora the Explorer is treasure-hunting that resembles The Goonies in its tone and spirit.

Spiderwick Chronicles (2008) – While slightly older, this movie has the adventure and mystical creatures, featuring kids who uncover a hidden world full of danger and wonder.

Stranger Things definitely not aimed at children though? More for adults who were kids in the 80s I would think.

Agree on Dora and would add the (admittedly quite good) Jumanji remakes/sequels.
