I like a good detective story and particularly Vera. I think Brenda is excellent and the episodes superbly written.

The stories must be written with consultation and presumably are reasonably accurate in the investigation methods etc.

My pondering are along the lines of how many murders would a real detective normally be involved with over their career. A couple? A few dozen? None?

Surely a lot would depend on where they are based.

My wife is a Detective within a busy homicide department and the answer is.....loads!

Honestly its a lot, her team are currently managing about 6 murders, and there are 8 teams in total with pretty similar work loads.

That has to be emotionally draining. There's no way I could do a job like that, especially given the circumstances of recent tragic events.

I may be wrong ,but I recall reading somewhere that getting a murder conviction is actually very difficult in comparison to manslaughter, hence why we see in the media some cases which the public believe was murder carry a different conviction as the latter is less likely to be disproven in court.

Anyway, it seems the English area of Midsomer is the murder capital of the world. Not going there for a holiday.

What the public believe or don't believe is or should be irrelevant.

On a PH related note, the pub in Midsomer Murders is The Six Bells at Warborough, Oxfordshire.

For the last two summers they have had an excellent well-attended classic car meet on the first Tuesday of every month, really worth a visit.

It was really well supported by the last tenants of the pub, unfortunately it closed in March 2024 but has just reopened under new management. The car meet is continuing with lots of support from attendees.

On a separate note, I have a Scottish mate who works in CID locally. I love getting him to say "there's been a murder", Taggart stylie! hehe

It can be very full on.

She normally forms part of the interview teams which can mean long arduous hours. If she's not doing that she's a family liaison officer so with the family of the deceased as a point of contact etc. That's by far the most draining as they have a direct line to her so even when she's at home she's answering the phone/replying to messages. It needs to be done though and she's good at it, I'm not so sure I could hack it. She manages them from the incident all the way through to conviction before she can disengage with them so she ends up being inserted into their lives for quite a long time.

From watching some true crime docs it appears that in real life a higher ranking officer would not be doing any of the going about interviewing people tasks, that would all be done by the DCs/Sgts/etc and the person leading the investigation would be sat behind a desk the whole time.

Which would certainly not make for an interesting drama show.

It would be interesting to hear from real coppers what they think the most realistic TV drama is.

'A' pub may be the Six Bells, but the Lions of Bledlow had a good run as the default pub, both exterior and interior, in the John Nettles days.

You think in Father Browns small village of Kembleford, with all these murders, mostly of the gentry, someone would say WTF is going on? Is there something in the water? Maybe a deeper investigation is needed?

It’s nearly as suspicious as Miss Marple - surely someone would notice a pattern that everywhere she goes, someone dies soon after. Definitely a wrong-un!

You don't want to be waiting in the queue at the hotel check-in and see Angela Lansbury checking in.

Was thinking the same thing. Murder she Wrote had around 240 episodes, that'll take some beating. Surely she should've been under investigation for all her 'involvement'? biggrin

'The only common variable in all these murders, was YOU, Miss Lansbury. I rest my case' biggrin

Shetland. It looks like a very dodgy place to go now, there's alsorts going on there.

At least Misomer and Kembleford are fictional places.

Yeah, but Shetland was a documentary. Wasn’t it?
