A great documentary on the great man.

Major memories of sitting watching the 1990-1995 period in summer holidays on my little bedroom TV set.

Amazed he never got a knighthood.

Hmm. Recently read his book. His account of consuming a huge amount of ginseng to get rid of what he had left to avoid taking it home or throwing it away sounded laughable. I keep meaning to buy and read a copy of ‘The Dirtiest Race In History’.

As a kid I was a huge fan. Not so sure now.

I remember him being described as the most balanced athlete in the world as he had a chip on each shoulder.

I forgot how good Darren Campbell was though when being coached by Linford.

Last week I was fortunate enough to meet Daley Thompson - I’d sooner have a chat and a beer with him than Linford…

I remember that 1996 disqualification vividly, it seemed crazy at the time. Almost as memorable as MJ's double.

Wasn't LC running 10.4 in his mid 20's, then boom he's sub 10? Whilst rumours followed lots of athletes of that time, my recollection was it was the worst kept secret in athletics that he was on the gear?

OT but your comment spurred a couple of watches of the unsurpassed Lucozade ad and reminiscing over Daley Thompson Decathlon arcade machines and the game for the Commodore 64....Ta!

Easy to forget how famous he was in the 90's.

He would have been in most people's top 3 most famous British sportsmen I'd have thought.

Couldn't name any current British sprinters, can only think of 1 track and field athlete full stop.

From my perspective no athlete isn't on "Gear", the recovery times are what you need/want/crave.

Seemed a fairly genuine guy, gear must have been quite common in those days, maybe a shot of night nurse before a race!

Definitely more than one question mark. The Seoul Olympic 100m final was known as the dirtiest final ever, for good reason.

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

OP posted about a documentary, but as it had no context I was unaware he was talking about something that was live at that moment in bbc2. So I asked for more context so I could watch it.

The poster straight after me answered the question and said it was on bbc. I have now watched it today on catch up and thought it was great.

Meanwhile, you wade in with some sarcastic smiley and now acting the big boy.

Grow up and stop looking for arguments on the internet.

Anyway, back on track, enjoyed it and looking into more info on a guy.

He was a relatively late developer, but worked incredibly hard and had a remarkable aura and focus in the big races.
Media at the time seemed to resent his success. He was aloof, proud to represent Britain, and they were racist.

Linford and Daley were both talented, highly driven, major stars in a golden age for UK athletics.

I'll remember staying up all night (while on a German exchange) watching DT beating Juergen Hingsen in the 1984 Olympics. What a performance that was!
Years later I went round to dinner at a friend's house who lived next door to Daley. I could see him watching athletics on a big screen, probably thinking to himself "I was faster that that...jumped higher than that...threw further than that...etc."

Reminds me of an old joke, Christie turns up to train and the drug testing team are there. He simply says 'I can't see you unless you have made an appointment'.

Lots of these documentaries to come I hope.

I used to love athletics on ITV with Jim Rosenthal, occasionally you'd get a superstar like Linford running, it was amazing TV and inspired me to go run/compete.

Televised Athletics just doesn't happen or do it for me now which is such a shame.
