Summer holiday is here and were finding it difficult to find films or tv shows that are suitable for the gang.

Main issue is, the higher rated films, 12 or 15 contain too much bad language, adultish scenes for the little one (7 years old) and the content suitable for the 7 year old is too 'babyish' (their words) for the older ones (11 and 14).

We've started watching scorpion which is fairly enjoyable and suits them all but have failed to find much else.

Calling all parents who have been through this - especially now as summer hols are here - help!

:-)

Worzel Gummidge (the new ones with Mackenzie Crook) are well worth a look. Find them on iPlayer.

You could always send them out into the garden to play!

Once Upon a Time.

Good mix of fairy tales, fantasy, adventure.
(and some nice ladies for the Dads).

Pixar and Studio Ghibli films are a pretty safe bet.

Really enjoyed working through the Pixar films I had missed at the cinema- Wall-E, Inside Out, Onward, Elemental were great.

Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio, the films are visually beautiful and tell interesting stories, My kids loved Porco Rosso, Howls Moving Castle and Spirited Away. Most of them are on Netflix.

During lockdown we worked through a bunch of TV series. The ones that spring to mind that are good family viewing:

My Family (old sitcom and an easy family watch)
Father Ted
Top Gear but only the challenges (my son was laughing so hard at the episode where they made ambulances, that he had to leave the room biggrin)

We also went through the IT Crowd but that's probably one for when they're older.

There were more. I'll try and remember.

Agree on Pixar and Studio Ghibli (not Grave of the Fireflies though). Loads of Illuminations/Dreamworks ones too from the last few years are on the streaming services; Sing/Sing 2, Bad Guys, Minions, Over the Moon, Abominable..

Netflix has decent series for this age group. Mine have loved: Captain Underpants, Teen Titans, Cupcake & Dino, Oddballs, Loud House, Boy Girl Dog Cat House Cheese, Hilda, Cuphead. They also loved "Run for the Money" which is a Japanese game show, sadly only 4 episodes

I do find now that the majority of 80s classic films and TV shows are too drab/boring to capture their interest for long! That said, the ones with an element of mischievousness were enjoyed, perhaps with the occasional fast foward: Gremlins, Labyrinth, Top Gun..

edit: Top Gear too ! Any one is watchable. I think it helps that they are short segments and you can skip the boring ones biggrin

I grew up watching these films along with The Blues Brothers, Smokey and the Bandit, Cannonball Run, Police Academy, Short Circuit, Goonies, Lost Boys, Time Bandits etc.

Few of them seem to stand up well today, Back to the Future may be the exception.

I had never seen Never-ending Story and as it is one of my partners favourite films I watched it with her recently. What a load of boring old crap.

Like most Nostalgia, these films are probably best left in the past, I really cannot imagine my children watching them.

Great shout - my son who's about to turn 10 loves it - and one of the shows I like watching with him.

We watch Modern Family together too - I've just looked it up and it seems to meet the approval for your ages.

Great analogy, scary to think that 1984 was forty years ago, but doesn't seem that long ago.

Forty years before I was watching Gremlins, Karate Kid, Terminator, Beverley Kills Cop and Footloose, D day was happening.

Young Sheldon is great, easy going TV.

It was a bit if a shocker to find out Sheldon's Meemaw was the receptionist in the Ghostbuster films.

Just remembered they do a bleeped version of Taskmaster which is another excellent show to watch as a family.

My 8 year old loves modern family, there's something for everyone in it.

She's obsessed with the simpsons too. It can be a little close to the mark sometimes (especially the earlier one's), but there's some great messages within it.

Wednesday was a hit too - borderline for a 7yo depending on maturity I would say.

Films: We've enjoyed E.T - especially at the outdoor cinema last summer. Labyrinth, Jurassic Park, The Goonies, Gremlins, Honey I shrunk the kids, Homeward bound.
