I must have watched Cannonball Run hundreds of times over the last 40 years - one of my all time greats love

Browsing Amazon last night and ooh - it's on - let's watch and show my youngest where all the quotes come from hehe

Now anyone who's seen this (and I suspect it's a lot of you) will know how awesome the opening credits are.

The iconic Countach screaming away at trouser tenting levels of RPM still gets the hairs on the back of my neck up even now...

But hang on! The V12 wail suddenly sounds like an asthmatic hoover! WTAF?!? confused

Why has someone committed this act of desecration?

I get that soundtracks change due to copyright amendments, etc, but surely the sound of an engine (which probably wasn't ever an actual Lambo V12) isn't up for scrutiny?

I didn't bother with the rest of the film after the credits and opted for the DVD - order and my sanity was swiftly restored cloud9

Had to get that off my chest. As you were...

It's on YouTube in its original glory.

I can't watch films on TV, got to have the dvd or I get annoyed when I spot an unnecessary edit.

Came here after googling this same question. My all time favourite film intro that I’ve watched many times. Just clicked on it on prime to relive that engine note and it was ruined! Can’t understand why they would need to edit the engine sound???

Why would they edit it? There's so many movies (inc recent ones) with OTT car chases, thundering engine noises etc.

I cancelled my Prime because of the advert surcharge ... anyone able to capture a snippet of what you're talking about so we can properly understand the scale of the sacrilege?

Sometimes I'd like to find the person that actually makes decisions like this. We all see odd "corporate" decisions and the individual behind it is always anonymous. But somewhere, an actual person must've decided it's a good idea.

More than likely its not because someone thought it was a good idea, it's because someone else claimed ownership/copyright of the audio and wanted paying a lot of money for its use, financial reasons are more than likely the reason.

Yeah I bet its a rights issue, they probably only bought a licence for a set time and have to renew between.
The people in charge obviously have no idea how iconic that sound is.

Or maybe the copywrite holders do, which is why its no longer on there as it was too expensive.

It's not a rights issue, you don't have timed licenses for sound effects or recordings of sounds, only original music.

The Lambo sound seems a massive issue debated online before, over on Ferrari chat and elsewhere. IMDB suggests interestingly that only the Region 2 Blu Ray release had the original Lambo sound on it, all others were dubbed. The version on Prime is definitely Region 1 as it has Southeast Asian distribution companies at the start and not 20th-Century. Perhaps this is where all the confusion stems from?

Either way it seems to have always been a topic for discussion and not a recent change. I guess the only way to check would be to get a Region 1 and Region 2 blu ray and compare.

Possibly - but it got me thinking how many times professionally I've seen changes be made that are quite clearly rubbish, but the person who signed off on it never pops up and says "yeah baby, I thought it was a great idea".

I think it's a question of why did someone decide to change it, not whether or not it has been changed. Did someone think the audience would be offended by the sound of a lamborghini V12, maybe? And if so, who is this "someone".

Questions we'll never know the answer too, for sure.

I'm just going back to university, full time, as an old bloke. I can see I'm going to have to spend a lot of time watching my P's and Q's.

I did check my DVD last night, cannot find which region it is however it shows the Asia distribution logos at the start but it does have the original opening.

Hmmm...unless you imported it I'd assume it'll be Region 2 (that's what we get as standard in the UK). Usually says on the back, it'll just be a number in a globe with PAL under it (or 1 and NTSC for region 1).
