Yes it may well have as some of us won’t qualify to comment on the NPE thread…

So much for free speech!

1 hour not long enough, only got dreadful soundbites. Imho Starmer got an absolute kicking although I doubt it will matter on the day. He had nothing to say about his plans, slightly concerning!

Had to fast forward through the climate catastrophe BS spin

It was awful TV- Sunak just shouting over the host and Starmer like some jumped up debating society sixth former, Starmer being the more more measured man but failing to get his replies across as a result.

Sunak really is a nasty little rich entitled p***k though.

Terrible format, very worrying that Starmer didn't really have any good answers for Sunaks very angry snipes, the 2k tax is over 4 or 5 years for example, Sunak made out it was over a year, Starmer failed to point that out and also that not every 'hard working person' (god they love to use that don't they) even has to pay tax etc.

I also feel that its a bit of rip take as yes of course we know there are only really 2 viable parties to get into power, but making it this obvious is silly IMO.... its a bit like just getting Arsenal and Man city to play at the start of the season and the winner is champion.....is it? Not sure it is like that but sounded good in my head..

Dreadful format - 45 seconds is not long enough to deliver a structured response to any question.
Dreadful host - allowing spoiled Sunak to talk over Starmer and her.
Dreadful selection of candidates.

Is it too much to ask for politicians to be the following:
Experts in their field (Education secretary that has lived and breathed education their whole careers for example)
Competent
Accountable
Bright
Quiet

I hate the fact that politics has become a popularity contest. It really wouldn't surprise me if soon we'll be voting them in by texting "STARMER to 84116" texts cost £1, please ask the bill payer's permission....

HoC is pretty boring most of the time which is why we leave BBC Parliament on when we leave the dog at home alone - outside Prime Minister's Questions it's people giving speeches, having pleasant debates without raising their voice, etc.

Much as I like Rishi I find it hard to take him seriously when he rambles on about the cost of living crisis, his personal wealth has increased by £120m to £650m in the last year, at this rate of increase he'll be making the Royal family look poverty stricken soon smile

I struggle to see how the host is being criticised. She was continually fighting Sunak and telling him to shut the frick up. Repeatedly.

What more could she have done? The issue is:

The format
No fact checking
No real time to give details of the answer
Covering too much in a short space

...

I'd rather see a one hour special with each individually, with 4-5 key areas being focussed on. With fact checking, no one else there arguing against them, but maybe just poking them where something doesn't add up.

My summary

Starmer: You've ruined <insert topic to taste>
Sunak: What are you going to do about it?
Starmer: Err ...........

Anyone who thinks the cost of living won't go up under Labour hasn't been paying attention. You only need to look at 2 areas to see that this is inevitable - domestic energy and driving.

The cost of providing renewable power can easily be found by looking at the projects completed to date. It is hugely expensive. A lot of talk about lies this week. Labour's claim that a wholesale transition to renewables in just 5 years will save every family £300 is an absolute whopper. Should such a plan be enacted then domestic electricity will get more expensive. The only alternative is more subsidy. Which is where tax rises would come in.

Taxing the living daylights out of oil and gas companies is not going to result in cheaper energy. Surely that is obvious? Seemingly not given the popularity of this amongst members of the public who clearly haven't thought about the consequences. Let me help. One of two things will happen. Either the cost will get passed straight to consumers and gas and pump prices will rise, or they will scale down UK operations, imports will rise, and ... gas and pump prices will rise. Plus UK's energy security is hardly improved by increased reliance on imports. Does anyone really believe that Labour will not restart the escalator on petrol/diesel taxes? Those who've thought about it certainly don't but that's hardly anyone.

If Labour do what they say then energy prices will soar - it is simply not possible to do what they are saying without this happening. That'll push up inflation and the cost of living. What will energy companies, parents with children at public schools and non-doms do? Just stand there and take the tax hike or vote with their feet? If they do the latter, which they will, then the tax raised will be less than Labour think. Then guess what happens and who ends up paying. I don't care who anyone votes for but if you're going to vote for Labour then at least do it with your eyes open. Don't just believe all this quart out of a pint pot so-called fully costed programmes - at least think about where the money is going to come from in the real world. Politicians are brilliant at overlooking unintended consequences. Labour are giving a master class in that right now, and everybody is just lapping it up.

Finally, look at Europe where left and centre left parties have ruled the roost for years. They all had plans which look remarkably similar to what Labour are saying here but people there have finally realised it will make them much worse off and are pushing back hard. Fast forward 3 years and that's here. Don't say you weren't warned because anyone I see moaning about it in the future will get a brusque told you so.

100% this. Why are they all so useless? I have absolutely no idea who to vote for and was browsing the various party websites and reading the websites of the candidates+ their side kicks. It worries me greatly that Rayner has no GCSE's and will be essentially co-running the country. We must have a minimum qualification standard of a C in Maths, English and Science to run the bloody country, surely ? Scary stuff.

Because the rewards for doing it are not big enough. Politics is all about gaining and holding power these days, it has nothing to do with running the country right, get good soundbites, try not to let the corruption spill out into the open too much, set yourself up for an easy life when you are done in politics.
