The BBC are doing a reboot of Rebus. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this as to me Ken Stott is Rebus. Never really liked the early John Hannah ones.

It's 6 episodes, all available on iPlayer on Friday 17th May and the 1st episode will air on BBC1 on Saturday 18th May at 9:25pm.

There was only ever one Hannible Hayes, one Sgt Bilko and one Jack Regan and there will only ever be one Rebus, Ken Stott.

Yup, although I haven't read the books, I know enough about the character to say, Stott was the man for the job..

Really? I'm the opposite, but I can't remember much of them and I don't think I ever watched the Ken Stott ones. I noticed some DVDs of the Ken Stott ones downstairs, so I'll have to have a look at them if they're any good. Any time I read one of the books I picture Rebus as John Hannah.

Read all of the books back in the early 2000s but then I got confused about the order of the post-retirement ones and which I had and hadn't read.

Radio Times said:
Richard Rankin, best known for Outlander and The Replacement, stars as title character John Rebus.

He's joined by Brian Ferguson (The Ipcress File, Spanish Princess) as John's brother Michael and Lucie Shorthouse (Line of Duty, Ten Percent) as Detective Constable Siobhan Clarke, Rebus's investigation partner.

I agree Ken Stott perfectly created Rebus for the screen, but I cringed at the way ITV sanitised him with no ciggies or very little drinking, unlike the books. Felt like they’d castrated his character. Very nervous also about how the BBC will apply their usual Woke filters to the books, I’m sure it’ll be even more sanitised and altered, but standby to be pleasantly surprised.

It's the BBC, with a history of f***ing up loved TV franchises with rampant diversity.

My money's on a black [non binary] female as Rebus. coffee

I was the opposite, reading the books I imagined Ken Stott before I'd seen the John Hannah or Stott versions.

Read all of the Rebus book, in order and I picture Ken in the role as I read the book.
There is only one Rebus as far as I am concerned.

The only thing I wasn’t sure about with Ken Stott is that he didn’t really give off the vibe of being ex SAS.

Other than that, he is Rebus as far as I am concerned.

He wasn't ex SAS, he failed selection.

Hmm. I thought he was.

According to the internet he was selected but had a nervous breakdown shortly afterwards.

So maybe we’re both wrong smile

In the original TV series, Rebus says that he failed selection when he is interrogating a mentally disturbed SAS veteran. Perhaps that's where the confusion arose.

All 6 episodes of the new production are now available on iPlayer.

From the trailer it looks more like a Van Der Valk-alike reboot.

Young Rebus in a modern setting.

Interesting to see that Rankin was involved in setting the tone for the series, so you'd hope that would be a positive.

Personally, I always liked John Hannah's portrayal.

I remember watching the John Hannah episodes and thinking they were ok but they really should have cast Ken Stott instead
