I normally sign into You Tube using my account - and face the usual barrage of annoying ads.

As an experiment. I have recently been looking at You Tube as a "guest" i.e. by not signing in using my account - and the volume and frequency of ads seems to have dropped significantly. Am I imagining this or is it genuine and, if it is genuine, have a found a permanent way of avoiding constant ads that does not involve me taking out a subscription?

Or will the You Tube algorithim find me out eventually?

I resisted YT Premium for ages, but as its my main way of watching stuff, I caved and am paying for it and its rather wonderful.

Not cheap, but then neither is your time and watching another Cadbury advert with some kid using buttons as currency or another drone/earwax removal spanner or whatever that nobody wants you to know about advert, I decided £16.99 is a small price to pay not to have that bks every 5 minutes.

Some channels/videos are almost unwatchable such is the ferocity of the ad content.

It's what I do... I don't sign into YouTube anymore and actually never see any ads via the Brave browser with adblocker.

There are very few sites I had subscribed to in any event, maybe 6 or 7, and I can remember them.

I signed up for YT Premium as well. Yes I can use an adblock on my browser, but not on my TV, and getting YT Music and the ability to keep a video playing on your phone with the screen off is really handy

At the moment, You Tube hasn't built up a clear picture of what you're interested in so cannot yet determine the sort of ads that fit your particular profile. But the more you watch, the clearer the picture and the number of ads you see will increase.

You can of course circumvent this by creating a new guest profile every couple of weeks.

A recent YT Premium sucker here.

My justification is that my time is worth more than the subscription.

I never watched the ads - I just sat there waiting for the first opportunity to click skip.

Even if I only did that about 3 minutes a day then that was 15 hours a year which I'd never get back.

I'm not sure I'll stick with it but at the moment, there's enough material to justify paying so will continue to do so.

It's odd how things have changed over the years. We used to watch 3-4 minutes of adverts, 3 or 4 times an hour on TV, in the days before we could record/skip or watch on demand. Nowadays we get pissed off having to watch 5 seconds of ads on YouTube (me included).

I think most of us can cope with ad breaks if they were obviously slotted into the right part of the main programme - with an "End of Part 1", End of Part 2" type intro to each ad break.

You Tube (due to the nature of the beast) just throws ads in irrespective of what stage the programme is at or if a person is mid sentence etc. They are just abrupt and intrusive and consequently, very annoying.

And they are also for products and/or procedures which are highly dubious and borderline illegal and very likely in contravention of UK Advertising Standards.

Does the UK Advertising Standards Authority have any power over the content shown on You Tube ads?

No need to pay that much, get a VPN and sign up at the Ukraine/Turkey etc prices.

I pay for Premium - I watch more youtube than anything else, so to me it's worth the money as it gives me YouTube music as well.

I noticed before I started on Premium, certain channels were just ridiculous with the amount of adverts in the - Edd China's channel being a particular nightmare - add to that the ads that are baked in to the content as well, and it's going to take you 40 minutes to see 20 minutes of actual content.

I'd not go back to the ad supported model - I'll either pay or not bother watching. There seems to be a general decline across the channels I subscribe to anyway at the moment (limited sample size of around 100 channels admittedly), and I'm struggling to find anything new that holds my interest enough to subscribe.

The price in the UK is £12 per month, it's likely £17 if you pay for via Apples playstore, if you subscribe directly from the website it's a fiver cheaper.

Or use a VPN to sign up (and it’s only needed for initial sign up) and it will be under £2 a month.

ASA falls under the control of OfCom and yes, they do indeed have the power to remove ads from You Tube as they do with any other media.

The difference between TV and You Tube ads is that with TV, the ads have to go through a clearing process before they get aired. Broadcasters are not allowed to air an advert unless it's been independently cleared first. This checks any claims made are truthful and that other standards have been met. With You Tube and other internet based advertising, pre-clearing doesn't happen so OfCom respond to consumer complaints reactively.

They do use technology to pro-actively address errant ads but this has some serious flaws (IMO).

I recently ran a campaign for a client (a Police Force) that was encouraging parents to speak to their kids about knives. The ads were quite hard hitting and emotive but conformed to all the guidelines. But the 'system' added two and two and came up with six, decreeing that we were promoting violence when the exact opposite was the case.

I never used to get any adverts until a few days ago, no idea why I'm suddenly getting them. Videos now start with two adverts, but with just audio and no picture, then there's a long pause before the actual video plays.

My son did this for me as I listen to a lot of music through YouTube, £2 a month for unlimited music with no ads until YouTube catch on to what people are doing !

Interesting, thanks.

Some of the products and services (especially those linked to health and medical issues) on You Tube are downright dangerous. They would not make to a TV screen through normal methods.

YouTube premium is one of my best purchases in recent times. Particularly as a very heavy user.

The issue with anonymous browsing is you do miss out on a lot of the recommendations which usually lead to finding the most amazing channels and people.

It's fine if you just want to watch a specific person or video. But for me, it misses the whole point which is to find other content and entertainment. It would be like having Netflix but only watching specific shows you knew abuot and not being made aware of all the other 5* shows.
