The David Nicholls book was a delight and the Netflix production is terrific . Ambika Mod (who came to attention as the suicidal doctor in This Is Going To Hurt ) is near faultless .

Surprised to read only one post on this. I’ve been watching it with my wife. I think we’ve watched 4 episodes but it’s really good. I’ve not read the book, but the two main characters are excellent.

The situations, and how the characters behave is excellent, it’s like watching two of your mates who obviously love each other repeatedly fail to get it on and then screw each other over, and although the era it’s set in makes them about 10-12 years old than me, I’m loving the late 80s/early 90s nostalgia so far.

As the OP said, the actress playing Emma is outstanding. She was equally brilliant in This Is Going To Hurt too.

Yep its a good series, as said above, you can relate to the situation of the two people being out of sync with their lives.

Not read the book, and so it will be interesting to see what the end result is.

Wife and I are big fans of the book.

We also loved the movie adaptation but as with all movie adaptations lots had to be left out becuase of run time.

We where looking forward to this but at the same time worried it might not meet our expectations.

Have to say its excellent.... only half way through and everything is spot on and including little bits from the book that just made it 'special '

Love the fact each episode is a year and no specific run time.... they just show what they need to show so one epsiode can be 25 mins long and another 40 mins. One of the positives about having it streamed and not made for TV.

We started this yesterday and a now on the final episode. At the beginning I didn’t gel with Dexter, it felt they had cast the wrong actor, as the episodes rolled on it proved me wrong.

Not read the book. Never heard of it before, but enjoyed the Netflix production from start to finish.

Well worth a watch, the episodes flyby.

No blokes in sheds/ car chases/ explosions /aliens and/or superheroes ** . Some may feel their masculinity compromised if one or more of these elements is missing .

  • let alone Gladiators, on which there is already a 31 page thread . Jeez .

Not read the book but felt compelled to watch it, maybe because parts of it I can relate to. I'm only on episode 4. Have to say I really liked the opening scene in 1988 with Frankie Knuckles your love, the soundtrack is excellent.

Excellent series, the last episode was some of the best drama I’ve seen on telly in years.

Love the music backing and strangely as a car enthusiast I like the attention to detail in the appropriate cars in the street scenes. That must have taken some doing!

Might seek out the book now.

The movie was dreadful, mainly because US actress Anne Hathaway was cast in the lead and struggled to maintain a Northern accent for even an entire sentence rofl

Might give the series ago if it has positive reviews, having read the book a long time ago.

Thought I'd read the book first after reading about the Netflix series. Really enjoying the book so looking forward to the series - it sounds promising.

Do watch it . If Ambika Mod doesn't get a BAFTA for this there is no justice . It is just abut perfect - period detail spot on, soundtrack sublime and performances universally great .

I finished it on Saturday night and keep replaying the first few minutes of the first episode. It's absolutely perfect. The song, the dancing, the first look at eachother.

There's a bit of chat about this in the Netflix thread.

I hadn't read the book or seen the film, I thought it was alright but at a point about halfway through I was getting quite frustrated that there wasn't a great deal of chemistry between them. They seemed to be two very different people with not a lot in common or a lot of history. There is an implied connection regardless - but we don't really see It/feel it. It took until that wedding episode for it to pick up.

But yes good soundtrack each year!

We've just finished watching it, and I thorough enjoyed it.

I initially didn't buy into them as a couple, but the chemistry built as the series went along. Apart from occasionally forgetting she was supposed to be from Leeds, Ambika's performance is brilliant.

The soundtrack just tops it off. I'm ten years or so younger then the character in the story, but it seems to go through my early music memories really well. Thinking About You by Radiohead is a real blast from the past and very well placed.

Still reading the book here and spotted a PH fail! Dexter apparently drives a 'Mazda MRII' (MR2) !!!

Enjoying the book but find the relationship a bit odd up to now. Emma seems lovely, a funny, entertaining character but Dexter just seems to be a bit of a knob - not a likeable character. Emma clearly deserves better. Will carry on reading and see how things pan out for them.

Quite enjoyed this, didn't expect to enoy it as I prefer blokes in sheds/ car chases/ explosions /aliens and/or superheroes but it was decent.

Love the book. Film was OK. I'm 6 episodes in at present and loving it.
Have to admit in the first couple of minutes I was peeved about Netflix going all woke but I take it all back. Ambika is amazing as Emma.
Looking forward to seeing how they deal with the 'ending'

I think thats one of the main themes of the programme - Dex starts out as a bit of a charismatic rich lad, with it all. He then takes that and becomes a bit of a bellend. Once he is on his uppers he becomes the person he should have been all along
