The Abyss is getting a massive upgrade, as a 4K remaster will premiere in theaters.

The official trailer has lots of spoilers if you have never seen it so put it in spoiler tags

I am sure this will be stunning - although some new scenes or revelations as surprises, would, from a personal standpoint, have been even nicer.

This looks to be based on the special edition which has additional scenes that the original theatrical verson did not. I have seen these extra scenes as I have the theatrical version and special edition on DVD

Bugger I think that might be the case but hope they show it in UK cinemas at some point.

This is so incredibly overdue, the film never even had a proper DVD transfer. It's also one of my absolute favourites

I love this film, I don't think they ever even released it on blu ray. I've known this was in the works for some time, it was Cameron finding time between all the Avatar bks to oversee the 4k transfer that took the time.

That trailer is very spoilerific if you've never seen the film.

Presumably a 4K Blu-ray will follow?

Great film, saw it as a late night double with The Terminator many years ago.

During the bit where Linsey is trying to keep Bud's spirits up, someone in the audience, who had seen the film before, let out a fake sob of grief, which killed the atmosphere a bit!

I wonder if he'll fix this bit (extra with the green shirt on the far left)?

Disc 1 :
Digitally THX Mastered
Multi-Story Option: theatrical/special edition versions
Text Commentary
Disc 2:
3 Theatrical Trailers

12 Page collector's booklet

The last time I checked the film hadn't even gotten a proper anamorphic DVD release - they basically re-used the scan from the LaserDisc version

Maybe technology has improved but I reckon they will struggle to make anything of it. It looks to me like it was shot on fast film to get the shots without artifical lighting,so its grainy with very little detail . Maybe AI remastering can fill in whats not there.
I get the impression they do this not out of love ,but to enable a longer life on streaming and the like ,as people will avoid grubby looking films like they used to avoid anything in B&W once colour film/tv came along.

You'd be amazed what a modern scan can pull out of old film without any silly image processing nonsense.

The SFX sequences might look particularly good as they made use of a fair bit of large format film. Likely the stuff which won't be good is anything with CGI due to the restrictions of the time, but I still think it will present well.

I hope it doesn't wind up as weird and plasticky as the T2 remaster.

I really don't get why people eulogise film grain, but that was way too far in the opposite direction.

I've seen a home made 4k upscale of the Abyss and it was seriously impressive.

Aliens is the one I'm most looking forward to.

I saw Aliens in the cinema a couple of years ago. I was surprised by the quality and the detail, I had always read that it was quite low quality but you could see droplets of sweat (or maybe angry froth!) on Ripley's chin for example.

I got an Apple TV recently so I've been dipping in and out of a lot of Prime/Disney/Netflix type stuff.

It's amazed me how much detail there is even on a "just" HD movie.

That's on a 55" OLED or a Macbook retina screen.

Presume it's to do with garbage in garbage out.
